Convert BMP to PSD
Updated Jul 2026
BMP is a plain, uncompressed image format built into Windows, with no layers or transparency. PSD is the working format used for photo editing, letting you add layers, masks, and effects. To convert, open the BMP in a converter and export it as PSD, done on your own computer without uploading anything.

How to convert BMP to PSD
- Open Morphjet and drag in the BMP file, or a whole folder of them.
- Choose PSD as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet writes the PSD next to your original, and the file never leaves your machine.
BMP vs PSD: what actually changes
| BMP | PSD | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Large, since pixels aren't compressed | Larger still, especially once you add layers |
| Quality | Lossless | Lossless |
| Opens everywhere | Yes, most image viewers and editors on Windows | No, needs Photoshop or compatible editing software |
| Transparency | No | Yes, layers and alpha channels |
| Layers and editing | No, flat image only | Yes, built for layered editing |
| Metadata | Minimal, rarely stores much beyond the pixels | Yes, keeps metadata and layer information |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert BMP to PSD when you want to open an old bitmap in Photoshop to retouch it, add layers, or build it into a larger design.
Keep the BMP if you just need to view or share the image as is, since converting to PSD only adds value once you start editing in layers.
Why not just use an online converter?
Old BMP files sometimes come from scanned documents, screenshots, or work archives you'd rather not hand to a stranger's server just to change the format. Uploading to an online converter means that image sits on someone else's machine, if only briefly. Converting on your own computer keeps it there the whole time, no upload, no account.
Questions
Does converting BMP to PSD lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so the pixels themselves don't change. What changes is the container. BMP is flat, PSD can hold layers, masks, and edits on top of that same image.
Can I open a PSD file without Photoshop?
Some free image viewers and editors can open PSD files, but full support for layers and effects is really built around Photoshop. If you just need a flat image, JPG or PNG opens more widely.
Will converting BMP to PSD add layers automatically?
No. The BMP has no layer information to begin with, so the PSD starts as a single background layer. You add layers yourself once you're editing.
Why convert an old BMP to PSD at all?
BMP is a dead-end format for editing, it's just pixels. Converting to PSD gives you a starting point you can build on in Photoshop, with layers, adjustments, and non-destructive edits.
Can this be done without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never touches the internet. You could disconnect your wifi and it would still work.
Morphjet converts BMP, PSD, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
