Convert JPG to PSD

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

JPG is the everyday photo format, and PSD is the layered file format used for editing in Photoshop. To convert JPG to PSD, open the file in a converter and export it as PSD, which places the photo on its own layer ready for retouching. Doing this on your own computer means the photo never has to be uploaded anywhere first.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert JPG to PSD when you're about to retouch a photo in Photoshop and want it sitting on its own layer, ready for masks, adjustment layers, or compositing with other images.

Skip the conversion if you're just viewing, sharing, or printing the photo, since a JPG already does that and a PSD only adds file size without adding anything you'd use.

Why not just use an online converter?

A JPG straight out of a camera or phone carries EXIF metadata, sometimes including GPS coordinates of where it was shot. Uploading that photo to a web-based converter to get a PSD back means that metadata reaches someone else's server along with the image itself. Converting on your own computer keeps the photo, and everything embedded in it, on the machine it started on.

Questions

Does converting JPG to PSD lose quality?

No. The PSD holds the pixels exactly as they were in the JPG, placed on a layer. Any quality loss already happened when the photo was originally saved as JPG, and converting to PSD doesn't add more.

Will the PSD have transparency?

Not automatically. The converted PSD opens with a plain background layer, same as the JPG. Transparency only appears once you add a layer mask or erase part of the image yourself in an editor.

Can I open a converted PSD without Photoshop?

Some other design and image editing programs can open PSD files with varying fidelity, but Photoshop or a compatible tool is the reliable choice, unlike JPG which opens almost anywhere.

Does the PSD keep the photo's metadata?

Yes, the date, camera details, and any GPS location stored in the JPG carry over into the PSD.

Can I convert JPG to PSD without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never travels over the internet to do the conversion.

Morphjet converts JPG, PSD, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
