Convert PDF to MOBI

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

PDF is a fixed-layout document format, and MOBI is the reflowable ebook format older Kindles read. To convert PDF to MOBI, open the file in a converter and export it as MOBI. Doing this on your own computer means the document, and whatever is written in its metadata, never has to leave your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert PDF to MOBI when you want to read a text-heavy document, like a novel or a plain report, on an older Kindle, where reflowable text is far easier on the eyes than a fixed page.

Keep the PDF if it has tables, multiple columns, charts, or a magazine-style layout, since reflowing that kind of content into MOBI can scramble the formatting you'd want to keep.

Why not just use an online converter?

PDF files often carry metadata you didn't think about, like the author's name, the company that created the template, and when it was last edited. Send that file to an online converter and all of that travels with it to someone else's server. Converting on your own computer means the document, and what it says about who made it, stays on your machine.

Questions

Does converting PDF to MOBI lose formatting?

For plain text it usually looks fine. For PDFs with tables, multiple columns, or complex layouts, the reflow can shuffle things around, since MOBI wasn't built to hold a fixed page.

Will the MOBI file keep the PDF's images?

Yes, images carry over, but they're placed inline with the reflowing text rather than fixed to an exact spot on the page.

Do newer Kindles still support MOBI?

MOBI was built for older Kindle devices. It's worth checking what format your specific Kindle prefers before converting a large library.

Does the MOBI keep the PDF's author and title info?

Usually, yes. Title and author metadata from the PDF typically carries over into the fields your Kindle shows for the book.

Can I convert PDF to MOBI without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts it on your own computer, so the document never has to travel over the internet to do the job.
