Convert RTF to XLSX
Updated Jul 2026
RTF is a formatted text document, and XLSX is a spreadsheet made of rows, columns, and cells. Converting pulls the text out of the RTF, and if it contains a table, lays that out as rows and cells in the spreadsheet. You can do this on your own computer without uploading the document anywhere.

How to convert RTF to XLSX
- Open Morphjet and drag in the RTF file, or a whole folder of them.
- Choose XLSX as the output format.
- Convert. The spreadsheet is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
RTF vs XLSX: what actually changes
| RTF | XLSX | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Flowing text with paragraphs and pages | Grid of rows, columns, and cells |
| Formatting | Keeps fonts, colors, bold, and layout | Simplified, most styling doesn't carry over |
| Tables | Supported inside the flow of the document | Native, become editable rows and columns |
| Opens in | Any word processor | Spreadsheet apps like Excel or Numbers |
| Editing | Free-form text editing | Cell-based, sortable, works with formulas |
| File size | Larger, formatting adds markup overhead | Smaller for the same text content |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert RTF to XLSX when the document is really a table or list dressed up as text, and you want to sort it, filter it, or run calculations on it.
Keep the RTF if the document depends on its formatting, like a letter, a resume, or anything with specific fonts and layout, since a spreadsheet flattens most of that away.
Why not just use an online converter?
RTF documents often hold things like invoices, client lists, or contract terms typed up as text. An online converter means that document, sensitive contents included, gets uploaded to a server you don't control before you get anything back. Converting on your own computer keeps it on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting RTF to XLSX keep the formatting?
Mostly no. Fonts, colors, and page layout are built for reading text, not for spreadsheet cells, so most of that styling is dropped. The text content itself carries over.
What happens to a table inside the RTF file?
If the RTF has an actual table, it converts cleanly into rows and columns in the spreadsheet. Plain paragraphs without a table structure usually end up one per row or per line.
Why would I turn a text document into a spreadsheet at all?
It's common when someone typed up a list or a table in a word processor and now needs to sort it, filter it, or add totals, things spreadsheets do and text documents don't.
Can I convert RTF to XLSX without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never travels over the internet, even with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts RTF, XLSX, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
