Convert WMV to WMA

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

WMV is a video format, and WMA is Windows' audio-only format, so converting means pulling the audio track out and dropping the video. Open the WMV in a converter, export it as WMA, and you're left with just the sound. Doing this on your own computer keeps the file off other people's servers.

How to convert WMV to WMA

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the WMV file, or a whole folder of them, that you want to pull audio from.
  2. Choose WMA as the output format.
  3. Convert. The audio track is extracted and written next to your originals, no video, just sound, and nothing leaves your machine.

Typical useWatching a recorded videoListening to a lecture, podcast, or song pulled from that video

When to convert, and when not to

Convert WMV to WMA when all you actually want is the sound, like a lecture recording, a podcast episode, or the music from a video, and you don't need the picture at all.

Keep the original WMV if you still need the video itself, since converting to WMA throws the video track away for good.

Why not just use an online converter?

WMV files are often personal recordings, a lecture, a meeting, a home video, and their soundtrack can be just as revealing. An online converter means that recording gets uploaded to a server you don't control before you get your audio back. Converting on your own computer means the file, and everything in it, never leaves your machine.

Questions

Does converting WMV to WMA lose quality?

The audio track in a WMV is already compressed, so pulling it out doesn't add much loss. If the audio has to be re-encoded into WMA, there's a small additional loss, similar to re-saving an MP3.

Can I get the video back after converting to WMA?

No. WMA is audio-only, so the video track is discarded. Keep the original WMV file if there's any chance you'll want the video later.

Will the song or file title carry over?

Basic metadata like title or artist tags usually carries over if it was already attached to the file, but WMV files don't always have that information filled in to begin with.

Does WMA play on a Mac or phone?

Windows Media Player handles it natively, but support elsewhere is patchy. If you need something that plays everywhere without a fuss, MP3 is the safer bet.

Can I convert WMV to WMA without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet does the conversion on your own computer, so the video and its audio never get sent anywhere. It works fine with the wifi off.
