Convert XLSX to DOCX
Updated Jul 2026
XLSX is the spreadsheet format Excel saves in, and DOCX is the Word document format. To convert XLSX to DOCX, open the file in a converter and export it as a Word document, where each sheet becomes a table of text. Doing this on your own computer keeps the spreadsheet, and whatever numbers are in it, off other people's servers.

How to convert XLSX to DOCX
- Open Morphjet and drag in the XLSX file, or a whole folder of them, at once.
- Choose DOCX as the output format.
- Convert. The Word document is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
XLSX vs DOCX: what actually changes
| XLSX | DOCX | |
|---|---|---|
| Live formulas | Yes, cells recalculate automatically | No, formula results are frozen as plain values |
| Multiple sheets | Yes, separate tabs in one file | No, each sheet becomes its own table in a single document |
| Best for | Numbers, formulas, sorting and filtering data | Reports, write-ups, and tables inside a page of text |
| Editing the layout | Rows and columns, grid-based | Free-flowing text and paragraphs around a table |
| Opens in | Spreadsheet apps | Word processors |
| File size | Compact for data-heavy content | Larger for the same data, since Word stores tables differently |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert XLSX to DOCX when you need to drop spreadsheet data into a written report, proposal, or memo as a plain table, and you don't need anyone to keep editing the numbers or recalculating formulas.
Keep the XLSX original if the data still needs live formulas, multiple sheets, sorting, or charts, since none of that survives the move into a Word document.
Why not just use an online converter?
Spreadsheets often hold things people don't want on a stranger's server, budgets, client lists, salaries, personal records. An online converter has to upload the whole file to see it. Converting on your own computer means that data is read and rewritten locally, and never travels over the internet to do it.
Questions
Do the formulas still work after converting to DOCX?
No. Word documents don't have a formula engine, so each cell's calculated result gets pasted in as a plain value or piece of text. If you need the formulas later, keep the original XLSX.
What happens to multiple sheets in the spreadsheet?
Each sheet is turned into its own table, one after another in the same document. There are no tabs in Word, so sheet names usually appear as headings above each table.
Does converting XLSX to DOCX lose formatting?
Basic formatting like column widths, bold text, and borders generally carries over. Things tied to spreadsheet behavior, like conditional formatting, pivot tables, or embedded charts, may not.
Can I convert XLSX to DOCX without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet reads and converts the file on your own computer, so it never leaves your machine or passes through anyone else's server.
Morphjet converts XLSX, DOCX, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
