Convert AI to GIF
Updated Jul 2026
AI files are vector artwork made in Illustrator, built from paths and shapes that scale to any size. GIF is a flat, pixel-based image format that browsers, chat apps, and social sites display natively, including simple animations. To convert, open the AI file in a converter, choose GIF, and export a fixed-size raster version, all on your own computer without uploading the artwork anywhere.

How to convert AI to GIF
- Open Morphjet and drag in the AI file, or a whole folder of them, at once.
- Choose GIF as the output format and pick the pixel size you want the final image to be.
- Convert. The GIF is written next to your original AI file, and nothing leaves your machine.
AI vs GIF: what actually changes
| AI | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, needs Illustrator or compatible vector software | Yes, universal support in browsers, chat apps, and social platforms |
| Editable artwork | Yes, shapes, paths, and text stay fully editable | No, becomes a fixed grid of pixels |
| Scales without quality loss | Yes, vector paths redraw sharp at any size | No, fixed resolution, looks blurry if enlarged |
| Color support | Unlimited, including gradients and blends | Limited to 256 colors per frame |
| Transparency | Yes, layers can have transparent regions | Yes, but only fully on or off, no soft edges |
| Animation | No | Yes, can hold multiple frames as a simple loop |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert AI to GIF when you need to drop artwork into a website, chat app, or social post that can't open vector files, or when you've built separate Illustrator frames and want them packaged as a small looping animation.
Keep the AI file if you still need to edit the artwork or want it to stay sharp at any size, since flattening to GIF locks in one fixed resolution and a reduced color palette.
Why not just use an online converter?
Illustrator files often hold logos, packaging, or client work that hasn't been announced yet. Uploading one to a web converter just to get a quick GIF preview means that unreleased artwork sits on a stranger's server in the meantime. Converting on your own computer keeps the file, and whatever it shows, off the network entirely.
Questions
Does converting AI to GIF lose quality?
Yes, in a specific way. The vector paths become fixed pixels at one resolution, and the colors get reduced to a palette of 256. For flat, simple artwork like a logo or icon this is barely noticeable; artwork with fine gradients can show some banding.
Can a GIF made from an AI file have a transparent background?
Yes, if the Illustrator artboard has transparent areas they carry over. GIF transparency is all-or-nothing per pixel though, so soft edges or shadows can look a little jagged compared to the smooth vector original.
Will I still be able to edit the artwork after converting?
No. GIF is a flat raster image, so once it's converted, the individual shapes, paths, and text from the AI file are gone. Keep the original AI file if you might need to change the artwork later.
Can I turn an AI file into an animated GIF?
Only if the motion already exists as separate artboards or layers meant to be frames. A converter can package those into a looping GIF, but it can't invent animation from a single static design.
Can I convert AI to GIF without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet converts the file locally on your Mac or Windows computer, so the artwork never has to leave your machine or pass through anyone else's server.
Morphjet converts AI, GIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
