Vector conversion
Convert AI to PNG
Updated Jul 2026
AI is a vector file format used for logos, illustrations, and other artwork, and PNG is a raster image format that any browser, phone, or app can open. To convert AI to PNG, open the file in a converter, pick a size, and export it as a flat image. Doing this on your own computer means the artwork never leaves your machine.

How to convert AI to PNG
- Open Morphjet and drag in the AI file, or a whole folder of them, to add it to the queue.
- Choose PNG as the output format and pick the pixel size you need, since PNG is a fixed-size image rather than a scalable one.
- Convert. The PNG is written next to your original AI file, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
AI vs PNG: what actually changes
| AI | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, needs a vector graphics app that reads AI files | Yes, universal support |
| File size | Often small, since it stores paths and shapes as math | Larger, since it stores every pixel |
| Quality at any size | Perfect at any size, it scales without blurring | Fixed to the size you export, enlarging it later blurs it |
| Transparency | Yes, supports transparent backgrounds | Yes, keeps transparency if the original had it |
| Editable shapes and layers | Yes, paths, text, and layers stay editable | No, flattened into a single image |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert AI to PNG when you need a flat image version of a logo or illustration to drop into a document, website, app, or anywhere a vector file won't open.
Keep the AI file if you'll need to resize, recolor, or edit the artwork later, since a PNG can only be scaled down cleanly, not up.
Why not just use an online converter?
AI files often hold work you don't want floating around, unreleased logos, client artwork, or a design under NDA. Uploading one to an online converter puts that file on a server you don't control while it processes. Converting on your own computer keeps the artwork local from start to finish.
Questions
Does converting AI to PNG lose quality?
PNG itself doesn't compress lossily, but you're turning scalable vector paths into a fixed grid of pixels. Pick a size at or above what you'll display it at, because enlarging the PNG afterward will blur it.
Will the PNG keep a transparent background?
Yes, if the AI file has a transparent background it carries over. PNG is one of the few common formats that supports transparency.
Do I need special design software installed to convert an AI file?
No. Morphjet reads the AI file directly and exports the PNG without needing the original design app installed.
Can I still edit the artwork after converting to PNG?
Not in the same way. PNG flattens the shapes, text, and layers into a single image, so you'd need to go back to the AI file, or a saved copy, to make changes.
Can I convert AI to PNG without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet converts on your own computer, so the artwork never travels over the internet, even offline with wifi off.
Morphjet converts AI, PNG, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
