Convert AVI to WMA
Updated Jul 2026
AVI files are video, and WMA is an audio-only format for Windows. Converting means pulling the audio track out of the AVI and re-encoding it as WMA, the video itself won't come along. A converter on your own computer does this without sending the file to anyone else's server first.

How to convert AVI to WMA
- Open Morphjet and drag in the AVI file, or a whole folder of them, that you want to pull audio from.
- Choose WMA as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet extracts the audio track and writes the WMA file locally, right next to the original, and nothing leaves your machine.
AVI vs WMA: what actually changes
| AVI | WMA | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains video | Yes | No, audio only |
| File size | Large, video dominates | Much smaller, audio alone |
| Compression | Lossless, or close to it | Lossy, compressed audio |
| Compatibility | Older Windows video format, uneven support outside Windows | Native on Windows, often needs extra software on Mac |
| Typical use | Full video with picture and sound | Lectures, interviews, voice memos, music |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert AVI to WMA when you only need the sound from a video, like a recorded lecture, interview, or a home movie's soundtrack, and you want a small audio file that plays natively on Windows.
Keep the AVI if you still need to watch the video, since converting to WMA throws away the picture for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
AVI files are often personal, home movies, meetings, recorded calls, and pulling the audio out shouldn't mean handing the whole video to someone else's server first. Morphjet does the extraction and conversion on your own computer, so the video and everything in it stay put, and only the WMA you asked for gets written to disk. You can do it with your wifi off and get the same result.
Questions
Does converting AVI to WMA keep the video?
No. WMA is audio only, so the picture is dropped entirely and you're left with just the sound. If you need the video too, keep the AVI or convert it to a different video format instead.
Will the audio quality suffer?
A little. WMA uses lossy compression, so there's some loss compared to the original audio track inside the AVI. For voice recordings, lectures, or podcasts it's usually not noticeable.
Does WMA play on a Mac?
Not natively. WMA is a Windows audio format, so a Mac usually needs extra software to open it, while it plays natively on Windows.
Can I convert AVI to WMA without uploading the file?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet extracts and converts the audio locally, so the AVI never travels over the internet.
Morphjet converts AVI, WMA, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
