Convert AVI to GIF

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

AVI is an older Windows video format, and GIF is a small, silent, looping image format that plays automatically anywhere. To convert AVI to GIF, open the file in a converter and export it as GIF, which turns the clip into a looping animation. Doing this on your own computer means the footage never has to leave your machine.

How to convert AVI to GIF

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the AVI file, or a whole folder of clips, that you want turned into a GIF.
  2. Choose GIF as the output format.
  3. Convert. The GIF is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert AVI to GIF when you want a short clip to play automatically as a looping animation, like in a chat, forum post, or article, without anyone needing a video player.

Keep the AVI, or convert it to a modern video format instead, if you need the full length, the audio, or smooth color, since GIF drops sound entirely and can only show 256 colors per frame.

Why not just use an online converter?

Most online GIF makers work by uploading your video file to their server, rendering the frames there, and sending a GIF back. That means whatever is in the clip, including anything personal or identifiable, passes through a stranger's system. Converting on your own computer keeps the footage on your machine the whole time.

Questions

Will the GIF have sound?

No. GIF simply doesn't support audio, so any dialogue or soundtrack in the AVI is dropped. If you need the sound, keep the video in a video format.

Does converting AVI to GIF lose quality?

Yes, noticeably. GIF can only show 256 colors per frame, so smooth gradients and subtle color video often show banding or a dithered, grainy look compared to the source.

How long can the GIF be?

There's no hard limit, but file size grows quickly with length and frame count. GIFs work best for short clips, roughly a few seconds up to under a minute.

Can I convert AVI to GIF without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet renders the GIF locally, so the video never has to travel over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.

Why is my AVI file hard to open on a Mac?

AVI is an older Windows format, and its codecs aren't always supported natively outside Windows. Converting it to GIF sidesteps that problem entirely, since GIF opens the same way on any device.
