Convert CSV to TXT

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

CSV files are already plain text, so converting to TXT mostly means giving the file a .txt extension and letting it open in a text editor instead of a spreadsheet app. Morphjet does this on your own computer, writing a new .txt file next to the original without uploading anything or touching your data.

How to convert CSV to TXT

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the CSV file you want to convert, or drop in a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose TXT as the output format.
  3. Convert. The TXT file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

CSV vs TXT: what actually changes

CSVTXT

When to convert, and when not to

Convert CSV to TXT when you want to view the raw data in a plain text editor, paste it into an email or a script that expects a text file, or stop a spreadsheet app from silently reformatting numbers, dates, or leading zeros.

Keep the CSV if you still need to sort, filter, or run formulas on the data, since spreadsheet apps read CSV directly but treat a .txt file as something you have to import and configure.

Why not just use an online converter?

CSV exports often carry real data, customer lists, financial records, survey answers, the kind of thing you would not want sitting on someone else's server. An online converter has to receive the whole file just to change its extension. Converting on your own computer keeps that data on your machine the entire time.

Questions

Does converting CSV to TXT change the data inside?

No. CSV is already plain text, so the values, and the commas separating them, come through exactly as they were. The only real change is the file extension and which app opens it by default.

Could I just rename the file instead of converting it?

For the raw content, yes, since a CSV file is already text. Morphjet does the same thing under the hood, but it handles the rename cleanly and can process a whole folder of files at once.

Will the TXT file still open correctly in a spreadsheet app?

You can open it, but most spreadsheet apps won't automatically split it into columns the way they do with a .csv file. You'd need to import it and tell the app the values are comma separated.

Can I convert CSV to TXT without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet converts the file locally on your computer, so it never travels over the internet, even with your wifi off.
