Convert Markdown to AZW3
Updated Jul 2026
Markdown is plain text with light formatting, used for docs, READMEs, and notes. AZW3 is the ebook format Kindle devices and apps read, with reflowable pages and a table of contents. To convert, run the Markdown file through a converter that turns your headings and lists into a proper ebook layout. This can be done on your own computer, without uploading the file anywhere.

How to convert Markdown to AZW3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the Markdown file, or a whole folder of notes if you're converting more than one.
- Choose AZW3 as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet turns your headings and lists into a paginated ebook and writes the AZW3 file next to the original. Nothing leaves your machine.
Markdown vs AZW3: what actually changes
| Markdown | AZW3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | Yes, any text editor or app reads it | No, needs a Kindle device or reading app |
| File size | Very small, plain text | Larger, but still compact for a book |
| Editability | Fully editable in any text editor | Not meant for editing, it's a reading format |
| Formatting | Simple markup, headings and lists only | Reflowable pages, table of contents, adjustable font size |
| Quality | Lossless | Lossless, the text and structure carry over exactly |
| Metadata (title, author) | None built in | Yes, stored in the ebook so it shows up correctly on a Kindle |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert Markdown to AZW3 when you've written something long, like a manual, a guide, or a collection of notes, and want to read it comfortably on a Kindle instead of scrolling through a text file.
Keep the Markdown original if you're still editing the content, since AZW3 is a reading format, not a writing one, and you'll want the plain text back to make changes.
Why not just use an online converter?
Markdown files often hold drafts, personal notes, or unpublished writing, not necessarily something you want passing through someone else's server just to reformat it. An online converter uploads the file to do the conversion and hands you back a download link. Morphjet builds the AZW3 file on your own computer, so the content never leaves your machine.
Questions
Does converting Markdown to AZW3 lose any formatting?
No. Headings, bold and italic text, lists, and links all carry over. Markdown doesn't support things like footnotes or complex tables, so if your file doesn't have them, there's nothing to lose in the conversion.
Will the AZW3 file work on a Kindle?
Yes. AZW3, also called Kindle Format 8, is the format Kindle devices and the Kindle apps read, with reflowable text and adjustable font size.
Does the ebook keep a title and author?
AZW3 supports metadata like title and author, and Morphjet fills this in from the document itself so it displays correctly on your Kindle's shelf.
Can I convert Markdown to AZW3 without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet converts the file locally on your Mac or Windows machine, so it never travels over the internet. You could even do it with your wifi off.
Will the AZW3 open on other e-readers, not just Kindle?
Not directly. AZW3 is Kindle's own format, so devices like Kobo or Nook expect a different ebook format instead.
Morphjet converts Markdown, AZW3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
