Convert WebP to HEIF
Updated Jul 2026
WebP is the compact image format many websites use today, and HEIF is the format Apple devices save photos in. To convert, open the WebP file in a converter and export it as HEIF. Doing this on your own computer means the image is processed locally and never has to be uploaded to someone else's server.

How to convert WebP to HEIF
- Open Morphjet and drag in the WebP images you want to convert. Add a single file or a whole folder at once.
- Choose HEIF as the output format.
- Convert. The HEIF files are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
WebP vs HEIF: what actually changes
| WebP | HEIF | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Small, tuned for the web | Small to medium, tuned for photos |
| Quality | Good, lossy compression | Good, lossy compression, with a small one-time change on export |
| Opens everywhere | Yes, in modern browsers and most current apps | No, mainly Apple devices, others often need an extra step |
| Transparency | Yes | Rare, not reliably supported across apps |
| Keeps metadata (EXIF) | Limited | Yes, HEIF carries it well |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebP to HEIF when you're bringing images into an Apple photo library or workflow and want them saved in the format those devices expect.
Keep the WebP if the image is staying on the web or in an app that already displays WebP directly, since converting it adds a re-compression step for no real benefit there.
Why not just use an online converter?
Most WebP to HEIF converters you find online work by uploading your image to their server, converting it there, and sending it back. That means a copy of your file sits on a machine you don't control, even if only briefly. Converting on your own computer skips that step entirely, so the image never travels anywhere.
Questions
Does converting WebP to HEIF lose quality?
A little. Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding from one to the other involves a small, one-time change rather than a perfect pixel copy. For everyday photo use it's not noticeable.
Will a HEIF file open on a Windows PC?
Not always without help. HEIF support is inconsistent outside Apple devices, so some Windows apps and older software may need an added component or may not open it at all.
Does the HEIF keep the WebP's transparency?
Usually not reliably. WebP supports transparency well, but transparency in HEIF isn't handled consistently across apps, so a transparent background can end up filled in.
Is metadata kept when converting?
HEIF is good at carrying metadata like camera and date information, so if your WebP has any, it should come through. WebP itself supports only limited metadata to begin with.
Can I convert WebP to HEIF without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet does the conversion on your own computer, so the image never has to leave your machine or pass through anyone else's server.
Morphjet converts WebP, HEIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
