Convert WebP to PNG
Updated Jul 2026
WebP is the compressed image format most websites use now, and PNG is the lossless format that design tools, screenshots, and older software expect. To convert WebP to PNG, open the file in a converter and export it as PNG. Doing this on your own computer means the image never has to leave your machine to get converted.

WebP vs PNG: what actually changes
| WebP | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | Mostly, modern browsers and apps, but not all older software | Yes, near-universal support |
| File size | Smaller, especially for photos | Larger, sometimes much larger |
| Quality | Lossy by default, some quality loss | Lossless, exact pixel copy |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Editing friendliness | Limited support in design tools | Widely supported for editing and re-saving |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebP to PNG when you need to open the image in a design tool that doesn't handle WebP well, use it as a logo or UI asset, or send it to someone whose software can't open WebP.
Keep the WebP if the image is only going on a website, since WebP is smaller and every modern browser displays it fine, so converting to PNG just makes the file bigger for no benefit.
Why not just use an online converter?
WebP files often come from screenshots or saved web images, and once you upload one to an online converter, it sits on a server you don't control until someone deletes it. Converting on your own computer keeps the image local the whole time, no upload, no account, no waiting on someone else's queue.
Questions
Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?
No further loss happens in the conversion itself, PNG is lossless. But if the original WebP was saved with lossy compression, whatever quality it already lost is baked in and won't come back.
Will the PNG keep transparency from the WebP?
Yes. Both formats support transparency, so any transparent background or alpha channel in the WebP carries over cleanly to the PNG.
Why convert WebP to PNG instead of just using WebP everywhere?
Some design software, older tools, and certain upload forms still don't accept WebP. PNG is the safer, more universally accepted choice when compatibility matters more than file size.
Can I convert WebP to PNG without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file right on your computer, so it never travels over the internet. You can do it with no connection at all.
Morphjet converts WebP, PNG, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
