Convert EPUB to MOBI

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

EPUB is the ebook format most e-readers and reading apps use, while MOBI is the older format built for early Kindle devices. To convert, run the EPUB through a converter that repackages its text and chapters into a MOBI file. Doing this on your own computer means the book itself never has to leave your machine.

How to convert EPUB to MOBI

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the EPUB file you want to convert. Add one book or a whole folder at once.
  2. Choose MOBI as the output format.
  3. Convert. The MOBI file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

EPUB vs MOBI: what actually changes

EPUBMOBI
Works onMost e-readers and apps, including Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, and current KindlesOlder Kindle devices from before 2011
File sizeCompact, uses modern compressionOften a bit larger, using an older compression method
FormattingHandles embedded fonts and complex layouts wellSimpler, some fonts and layout details may not carry over
Table of contentsFull clickable navigationUsually works, but can be flattened or less precise
Metadata (title, author, cover)Rich, detailed supportBasic, core fields and the cover image survive

When to convert, and when not to

Convert EPUB to MOBI if you have an older Kindle, like an original Kindle or a Kindle Keyboard, that only reads MOBI or AZW files rather than newer formats.

Keep the EPUB if your e-reader is a Kobo, Apple Books, or a Kindle bought since 2022, since current Kindles can open EPUB directly and EPUB is the more capable format anyway.

Why not just use an online converter?

An ebook file is basically your reading library, sometimes with notes or a purchase trail baked into the metadata. Uploading it to a website converter means a stranger's server handles the whole book, even briefly. Converting on your own computer keeps the file, and whatever's attached to it, on your machine the entire time.

Questions

Does converting EPUB to MOBI lose quality?

The text itself carries over fine. What can get lost is fancier formatting, like embedded fonts, complex CSS, or fixed-layout pages, since MOBI supports less of that than EPUB does.

Do I even need MOBI for my Kindle?

Only if it's an older model. Kindles sold since late 2022 can open EPUB files directly through Send to Kindle, so check your device before converting.

Will the cover and book details carry over?

Yes, the title, author, and cover image survive the conversion. More detailed metadata fields may get simplified since MOBI supports less of it than EPUB.

Is MOBI still a current format?

Not really. Amazon stopped accepting new MOBI files for publishing in 2021 and moved to newer formats, but MOBI still works fine for reading on the older devices that need it.

Can I convert EPUB to MOBI without uploading the book anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the book never travels over the internet.

Morphjet converts EPUB, MOBI, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
