Convert MOBI to EPUB

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

MOBI is the ebook format older Kindles use, and EPUB is the format almost every other e-reader and reading app understands. To convert MOBI to EPUB, open the file in a converter and export it as EPUB. Doing this on your own computer means your book, and your reading library, never has to be uploaded anywhere.

How to convert MOBI to EPUB

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the MOBI file, or a whole folder of them if you're converting a library at once.
  2. Choose EPUB as the output format.
  3. Convert. The EPUB is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert MOBI to EPUB when you want to read a book on a Kobo, Apple Books, or any e-reader that isn't a Kindle, or when you're moving a personal ebook library off Kindle for good.

Keep the MOBI if you only ever read on a Kindle, since Kindle devices and apps already handle MOBI natively and there's nothing to gain from converting it.

Why not just use an online converter?

Your ebook library says a lot about you, from what you read to how often. An online converter asks you to upload the book file to a server you don't control before handing it back. Converting on your own computer means the file stays put, so no copy of your book, or your reading list, ends up on someone else's server.

Questions

Does converting MOBI to EPUB lose any quality or formatting?

No. Both formats store text and layout in a similar, reflowable way, so a MOBI to EPUB conversion doesn't degrade the text, images, or chapter structure.

Will the cover, title, and author still show up?

Yes. That metadata is stored inside the MOBI file and carries over to the EPUB, so your library still shows the right cover and details.

Can I convert a Kindle book that has DRM on it?

If the MOBI file is copy protected, a converter can't strip that protection, so it won't produce a readable EPUB. This works on MOBI files you own free and clear, like your own writing or DRM-free downloads.

Can I do this without uploading my book?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally on your own computer, so the book never has to travel over the internet, even with your wifi off.
