Convert EPUB to Markdown

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

EPUB is the packaged e-book format most e-readers use, and Markdown is plain text with light formatting, readable in any text editor. To convert, open the EPUB in a converter and export it as Markdown, which pulls out the book's text and structure. Doing this on your own computer means the book never leaves your machine.

How to convert EPUB to Markdown

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the EPUB file you want to convert. Add one book or a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose Markdown as the output format.
  3. Convert. The Markdown file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

EPUB vs Markdown: what actually changes

EPUBMarkdown
Opens everywhereNo, needs an e-reader app or deviceYes, opens in any text editor
File sizeLarger, bundles text, styling, and imagesMuch smaller, plain text only
Formatting and imagesRich, keeps layout, fonts, and embedded picturesBasic, headings and emphasis only, images are usually dropped or linked
EditabilityHard, needs an e-book editorEasy, anyone with a text editor can edit it
Title and author metadataBuilt in, structured fieldsNot built in, may appear as plain text at the top if the converter adds it

When to convert, and when not to

Convert EPUB to Markdown when you want to edit, quote, or reuse a book's text in notes, a wiki, or a writing tool, or when you'd rather archive the text itself in a plain format you can open decades from now.

Keep the EPUB if you actually want to read the book, since Markdown drops the layout, fonts, and embedded images that make an e-book pleasant to read.

Why not just use an online converter?

An EPUB can reveal exactly what you're reading, along with any personal notes or highlights saved inside it. Uploading it to an online converter means a stranger's server holds a copy of that file, even if only briefly. Converting on your own computer keeps the book, and what it says about you, private to your machine.

Questions

Does converting EPUB to Markdown lose anything?

Yes, some. Markdown keeps the text and basic structure like headings and paragraphs, but it drops embedded images, custom fonts, and page layout, so it reads more like a plain manuscript than a formatted book.

Will images in the EPUB carry over?

Not directly. Markdown doesn't have EPUB's way of embedding pictures, so images are usually left out or referenced by a link instead, depending on the converter.

Does the Markdown file keep the book's title and author?

That depends on the converter. Some add it as a short line of plain text at the top of the file, but Markdown itself has no dedicated metadata fields the way EPUB does.

Can I convert an EPUB without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the book's text never travels over the internet.

Why convert an e-book to Markdown at all?

Markdown is plain text, so it opens in any editor, works well with notes apps and version control, and will still be readable years from now regardless of what e-reader software exists then.
