Convert ODT to AZW3
Updated Jul 2026
ODT is a word processor document format, and AZW3 is the e-book format Kindle devices and apps read. To convert ODT to AZW3, open the document in a converter and export it as AZW3, which reflows the text to fit a screen instead of keeping fixed pages. Doing this on your own computer means the document never has to be uploaded anywhere.

ODT vs AZW3: what actually changes
| ODT | AZW3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens on Kindle | No | Yes |
| Page layout | Fixed pages, precise formatting | Reflows to fit the screen, no fixed pages |
| Editability | Fully editable in a word processor | Meant for reading, not editing |
| File size | Small, similar for plain text documents | Small, similar for plain text documents |
| Tables, columns, and images | Preserved exactly as placed | May shift or simplify to fit the reflowed layout |
| Title and author metadata | Stored in the document properties | Carried over, shown in your Kindle library |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert ODT to AZW3 when you've written something in a word processor, like a manuscript, report, or long document, and want to read it on a Kindle device or app with adjustable text size.
Keep the ODT if you still need to edit the document, or if it relies heavily on precise page layout, tables, or columns, since those don't always survive the reflow into an e-book format.
Why not just use an online converter?
A document you've written, whether it's a manuscript, a personal journal, or a work report, is often the kind of file you'd rather not send to someone else's server just to change its format. An online converter uploads the whole document to convert it. Doing it on your own computer means the text stays on your machine the entire time.
Questions
Does converting ODT to AZW3 change the formatting?
Yes, somewhat. AZW3 reflows text to fit the reader's screen and font size, so fixed page breaks go away. Plain text and simple formatting carry over well, but tables, columns, and precise layouts may shift.
Will the AZW3 keep my document's title and author info?
Yes. The title and author stored in the ODT's document properties carry over and show up in your Kindle library, so you're not left with a generic file name.
Can I convert ODT to AZW3 without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so the document never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Is AZW3 the right format for reading a document on Kindle?
Yes, it's the format Kindle devices and apps are built to read, and it handles reflowable text better than exporting to a fixed-page format.
Can I still edit the document after converting it to AZW3?
Not really. AZW3 is meant for reading, not editing. Keep your original ODT if you'll need to make changes later.
Morphjet converts ODT, AZW3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
