Convert PPTX to ODT
Updated Jul 2026
PPTX is a slide presentation, and ODT is a plain text document, so converting one to the other pulls the text, notes, and images off each slide and lays them out as a document you can read top to bottom. Open the file in a converter and export it as ODT. Doing this on your own computer means the slides never have to leave your machine.

How to convert PPTX to ODT
- Open Morphjet and drag in the PPTX file, or a whole folder of presentations at once.
- Choose ODT as the output format.
- Convert. The document is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
PPTX vs ODT: what actually changes
| PPTX | ODT | |
|---|---|---|
| Format type | Slide presentation | Text document |
| Layout | Slides, positioned text and images | Linear pages, one flow of text |
| Opens in | Presentation software | Word processors |
| Animations and transitions | Yes | Not applicable, dropped in conversion |
| Speaker notes | Attached to each slide | Can be included as text under each section |
| File size | Larger, embeds fonts and media | Usually smaller, text-focused |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert PPTX to ODT when you need the content of a presentation as a readable, editable document, for example to print handouts, paste into a report, or send someone the words without the slide design.
Keep the PPTX if you still need to display or edit it as an actual presentation, since a text document has no slides, transitions, or click-through order to present from.
Why not just use an online converter?
Presentations often hold more than what's on screen, like speaker notes, draft slides, or client names in the file properties. Uploading a PPTX to a web-based converter puts all of that on someone else's server just to get a document back. Converting on your own computer keeps the deck, and everything in it, on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting PPTX to ODT keep the slide design?
No. ODT is a text document format, not a presentation format, so the layout, backgrounds, and positioning of a slide don't carry over. What comes through is the text content, laid out as a document.
Are the images from my slides kept in the ODT?
Yes, images are generally carried over and embedded in the document near the text they were placed with, though the exact positioning from the slide won't be preserved.
What happens to speaker notes?
They can be brought into the document as text alongside the slide content, so you don't lose them, but they'll read as part of the document rather than as separate notes.
Can I open an ODT file without buying anything?
Yes. ODT is a widely supported document format, and free word processors on both Mac and Windows can open it.
Can this be done without uploading the presentation anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never travels over the internet. You could do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts PPTX, ODT, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
