Convert ODT to PPTX
Updated Jul 2026
ODT is the text document format used by free office suites, and PPTX is PowerPoint's presentation format. To convert, open the ODT file in a converter and export it as PPTX, which turns your text into slides. Doing this on your own computer means the document never has to leave your machine.

ODT vs PPTX: what actually changes
| ODT | PPTX | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens in | a free office suite or Word with a plugin | PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides |
| Structure | One continuous flow of pages | Separate slides, viewed one at a time |
| File size | Compact, mostly text and paragraph styles | Larger, includes slide layouts and themes |
| Formatting | Full control over paragraphs and page layout | Content is reflowed into slides, so exact layout doesn't carry over |
| Best for | Reports, letters, essays | Talks, pitches, walkthroughs |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert ODT to PPTX when you need to turn a written report, outline, or set of notes into a presentation deck for a talk or meeting, especially if the people you're presenting to expect a PowerPoint file.
Keep the ODT if the document is meant to be read as text, since turning it into slides breaks the paragraphs and pages apart, and someone will still need to go back and rearrange the result by hand.
Why not just use an online converter?
A document you're turning into a presentation might hold unreleased pitch details, financial notes, or other information you'd rather not send anywhere. Online converters ask you to upload the ODT to their servers to do this reflow, and you have no way of knowing how long it sits there or who can see it. Converting on your own computer keeps the whole document, and whatever is written inside it, on your machine the entire time.
Questions
Will converting ODT to PPTX turn my document into slides automatically?
Yes, but the split isn't perfect. The converter maps your paragraphs and headings onto slides, so plan to go through afterward and adjust where one slide ends and the next begins.
Does the formatting carry over exactly?
Not exactly. ODT is built for continuous pages, and PPTX is built for individual slides, so tables, images, and text boxes usually need a pass to look right once they land on a slide.
Can I open the resulting PPTX in Google Slides or Keynote?
Yes. PPTX is the standard PowerPoint format, and it opens in PowerPoint, Keynote, and Google Slides without needing extra plugins.
Is there a quality loss going from ODT to PPTX?
No. Both formats store text and images without compression artifacts, so nothing is degraded. What changes is the layout, not the quality of the content itself.
Can I convert ODT to PPTX without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet does the conversion locally, so the document never has to leave your computer or pass through anyone else's server.
Morphjet converts ODT, PPTX, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
