What is a PPTX file?
Updated Jul 2026
PPTX is the file format for PowerPoint presentations, the slide-based format most people use for pitch decks, lectures, and reports. It stores slides, text, images, and layout losslessly, so nothing is degraded when you save it. The catch is that it's a document format tied to a specific app, so opening or editing it depends on having compatible software.

Why PPTX exists
PPTX became the default PowerPoint format in 2007, replacing the older PPT format. Underneath, a PPTX file is actually a zipped folder of XML files describing each slide, its text, images, and formatting, plus any embedded fonts or media.
That structure is why PPTX files can look identical on the machine that made them but render slightly differently elsewhere: a font substitution, a shifted image, or a missing animation. The format itself is lossless, but the experience of opening it depends on what's installed on the other end.
People run into PPTX most often when they need to share a deck with someone who doesn't have compatible presentation software, when they want a static version for printing or archiving, or when they're pulling images and text out of a presentation to use somewhere else.
The trade-offs
Strengths
- Widely used standard for presentations across work and school
- Keeps slides, text, and images fully editable
- Supports animations, transitions, and embedded media
- Lossless: no quality lost when saving or reopening
Watch-outs
- Needs compatible software to open and edit properly
- Layout and fonts can shift between different apps or devices
- Not ideal for sharing a fixed, unchangeable version
- Can grow large with embedded video or high-resolution images
A note on privacy
A PPTX file can carry hidden metadata: the author's name, the organization it was created under, edit history, and sometimes speaker notes or comments left during review. Uploading it to an online converter sends all of that, along with the slide content, to a server you don't control. Converting on your own machine keeps the deck and everything embedded in it on your computer.

Questions
How do I open a PPTX file?
Presentation software that supports PowerPoint format, on Mac, Windows, or mobile, will open it directly. If you don't have compatible software, converting it to PDF lets you view the slides without one.
Is PPTX better than PDF?
For editing slides, yes: PPTX keeps every element separate and adjustable. For sharing a version that looks the same everywhere and can't be easily changed, PDF is usually the better choice.
Why does my presentation save as PPTX?
It's the standard format for slide-based presentations, so most presentation software defaults to it when you save a new file.
Can I convert PPTX without uploading it?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts PPTX to PDF or image files on your own computer, so the slides and any hidden metadata never leave your machine.
Morphjet opens and converts PPTX and 1,800+ other formats, all on your own computer. Launching this July.
