Convert WebP to PSD

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

WebP is the compact image format many websites use, and PSD is the layered file format Photoshop and similar editors work with. To convert WebP to PSD, open the file in a converter and export it as PSD. Doing this on your own computer means the image never has to be uploaded anywhere just to change its format.

How to convert WebP to PSD

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the WebP image, or a whole folder of them, to convert several at once.
  2. Choose PSD as the output format.
  3. Convert. The PSD is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

WebP vs PSD: what actually changes

WebPPSD
Opens everywhereYes, in browsers and most modern image appsNo, needs Photoshop or a compatible editor
File sizeSmall, built for the webMuch larger, since PSD stores uncompressed image data
QualityLossy by default, some detail already discardedLossless, keeps everything from the source pixel for pixel
TransparencyYesYes
LayersNo, always a single flat imageSupports layers, though a converted file starts as one
MetadataLimited supportCarries metadata along with the file

When to convert, and when not to

Convert WebP to PSD when you need to open a web image in Photoshop or a similar editor to retouch it, add layers, or build it into a bigger design file.

Keep the WebP if it's just going back on a website or app, since a PSD is far larger and adds nothing for plain viewing or sharing.

Why not just use an online converter?

Most WebP to PSD converters are websites, which means your image has to be uploaded to a server you don't control before you get a file back. Converting on your own computer skips that step entirely. The image stays on your Mac or PC the whole time, and you can do it with your wifi off.

Questions

Does converting WebP to PSD lose quality?

No further quality is lost in the conversion itself, since PSD is lossless. But if the original WebP was saved with lossy compression, whatever detail it already lost stays lost. The PSD just faithfully carries forward what was there.

Can I open a PSD file without Photoshop?

Some other image editors can open PSD files, but support varies and layers or effects can render differently. Browsers and most everyday image viewers can't open PSD at all, which is the opposite of WebP.

Will the PSD keep the image's metadata?

Yes, PSD carries metadata along with the image, so information like the date or description stored in the WebP file should carry over.

Why convert a WebP to PSD instead of just editing the WebP?

Most photo editors, especially Photoshop, are built around PSD as their native working format. Converting first gets you a file that behaves properly with layers, adjustment tools, and saving back into that workflow.

Can I convert WebP to PSD without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never travels over the internet to do the job.
