Vector conversion
Convert EMF to SVG
EMF is a Windows-only vector format used for clipart and graphics embedded in Office documents, while SVG is the vector format that browsers and modern design tools understand natively. To convert, open the EMF file in a converter and export it as SVG. This can be done on your own computer, without uploading the file anywhere.
All 2,748 conversions verified on macOS, Windows, and Linux against the shipping release, this one included. Every conversion runs entirely on your own computer.

EMF vs SVG: what actually changes
| EMF | SVG | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, mainly Windows and Office apps | Yes, every modern browser and design tool |
| Works on the web | No, browsers can't render it | Yes, it's a native web format |
| Quality | Lossless vector shapes | Lossless, shapes carry over exactly |
| Transparency | Limited support | Yes, full support |
| Editable in design tools | Only in Windows-specific software | Yes, opens in most vector editors |
| File size | Compact | Compact, usually similar or smaller |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert EMF to SVG when you need to use old Windows clipart or an Office graphic on a website, in a design tool, or on a Mac, since none of those open EMF natively.
Keep the EMF if you're still editing the graphic inside Windows or Office, since that's the format those apps expect.
Why not just use an online converter?
EMF files often come from internal Office documents or old company clip art libraries, sometimes with content that isn't meant to be public. An online converter uploads that file to a stranger's server just to do the conversion. Doing it on your own computer means the graphic never leaves your machine.
Questions
Does converting EMF to SVG lose quality?
No. Both are vector formats, so shapes, lines, and curves convert without loss. The one exception is if the EMF contains embedded raster images, which just carry over as-is.
Will the SVG keep the original colors and layout?
Yes, in general. One thing to watch for is text: some EMF files store text as editable characters and others as outlined shapes, and the SVG will reflect whichever the original used.
Can I open an SVG file on a Mac?
Yes. SVG is a web standard, so it opens in any browser and in most Mac design and image apps, unlike EMF, which is a Windows format.
Can I convert EMF to SVG without uploading the file?
Yes. A desktop app does the conversion locally on your computer, so the file never travels over the internet.
