Camera RAW conversion
Convert NEF to GIF
Updated Jul 2026
NEF is the raw file format Nikon cameras save, holding unprocessed sensor data that most apps can't open directly. GIF is a simple, universal image format. To convert, open the NEF in a converter and export it as GIF. Doing this on your own computer keeps the shot, and any location data buried inside it, off other people's servers.

How to convert NEF to GIF
- Open Morphjet and drag in the NEF files from your card or folder. Add one photo or a whole shoot at once.
- Choose GIF as the output format.
- Convert. The GIFs are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
NEF vs GIF: what actually changes
| NEF | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, needs Nikon software or a raw-capable app | Yes, opens in any browser or image viewer |
| File size | Very large, tens of megabytes per shot | Small, especially for simpler images |
| Color depth | High, 12 to 14 bits per channel from the sensor | Low, 256 colors total per frame |
| Quality | Full sensor detail, unprocessed | Reduced, colors get flattened to a limited palette |
| Transparency | No | Yes, simple on or off transparency |
| Metadata | Full EXIF, camera settings, often GPS location | Minimal, most of it is dropped on export |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert NEF to GIF when you need a small, simple image that opens anywhere, like a quick preview for a forum post, an old system, or a template that specifically expects a GIF.
Keep the NEF original if you plan to edit exposure or white balance later, or want a high-quality print, since GIF's 256-color palette can't reproduce a photo's gradients and tones the way the raw file can.
Why not just use an online converter?
NEF files carry full EXIF data, including camera settings and often the exact GPS location where the photo was taken. Send that file to an online converter and a stranger's server receives all of it along with the image. Converting on your own computer means the shot, and where you took it, never leaves your machine.
Questions
Does converting NEF to GIF lose quality?
Yes, and more than most conversions. GIF only supports 256 colors, so a photo's smooth skies and skin tones get flattened into visible bands. It's fine for simple graphics, not for preserving a photograph.
Will the GIF keep the photo's metadata?
Mostly no. GIF isn't built to carry rich metadata, so camera settings, date, and GPS location from the NEF are dropped on export, unlike converting to JPG or TIFF.
Why would anyone convert a raw NEF to GIF?
Usually not to preserve the photo itself. It's for cases where a specific tool, old system, or template only accepts GIF and you just need something that opens.
Do I need Nikon software to open a NEF first?
No. A converter that reads raw files opens the NEF directly and exports it, no separate Nikon software required.
Can I convert NEF to GIF without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet does the conversion on your own computer, so the photo never travels over the internet. You could do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts NEF, GIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
