Camera RAW conversion

Convert NEF to JPG

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

NEF is the raw format Nikon cameras save by default, holding all the untouched sensor data. JPG is the compressed, compact format that opens on any device without special software. To convert NEF to JPG, open the raw file in a converter and export it as JPG. Doing this on your own computer means the shot never has to leave your machine.

How to convert NEF to JPG

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the NEF files you want to convert. Add a single photo or an entire folder from a shoot at once.
  2. Choose JPG as the output format, and set a quality level if you want a smaller file.
  3. Convert. The JPGs are written next to your originals, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert NEF to JPG when you're done editing and need to share a photo, upload it somewhere, print it, or view it on a device or app that can't read raw files.

Keep the NEF original if you might still adjust the exposure, white balance, or crop, since raw files hold detail a JPG export can't recover.

Why not just use an online converter?

NEF files carry the camera's full EXIF data, including the settings used for the shot and, on some Nikon cameras, the GPS location. An online converter would receive that raw file and everything embedded in it before handing back a JPG. Converting on your own computer means the photo, and where and how it was taken, stays on your machine the whole time.

Questions

Does converting NEF to JPG lose quality?

Yes, a little, and it's a one-way trip. A NEF holds the full range of data the camera's sensor captured, and exporting to JPG compresses that down into a final image. For sharing or printing it looks the same to the eye, but you lose the ability to re-edit exposure or white balance afterward.

Can I open a NEF file without converting it first?

Only with raw-capable software, like a photo editor that supports Nikon's format. Most web browsers, photo viewers, and phones can't open NEF directly, which is why converting to JPG is so common.

Will the JPG keep the shot's camera settings and location?

Yes. The date, camera model, exposure settings, and GPS location (if your camera recorded it) carry over to the JPG unless you deliberately strip that metadata during export.

Why are NEF files so much bigger than JPGs?

A NEF stores the raw, uncompressed data straight off the camera's sensor, so there's more editing room but a much bigger file. A JPG throws away the data a viewer likely won't notice, which is why it's a fraction of the size.

Can I convert NEF to JPG without uploading my photos?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet processes the raw files on your own computer, so they never travel over the internet. You can do a whole folder from a shoot with your wifi off.

Morphjet converts NEF, JPG, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
