What is an NEF file?
Updated Jul 2026
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is the raw image format Nikon cameras use to store photos exactly as the sensor captured them, before any in-camera processing. It keeps every bit of detail the sensor recorded, which makes files large and means most photo viewers, editors, and websites can't open them without converting first.

Why NEF exists
When a Nikon camera saves a NEF file, it skips the processing a JPG normally gets in-camera, like sharpening, color correction, and compression. Instead it writes out the raw data straight from the sensor, along with the camera settings used at the time. That's why photographers call it a digital negative: it's the unedited source, not a finished picture.
Keeping all that raw sensor data means a NEF file holds more dynamic range and color information than a JPG ever could, which gives you more room to fix exposure or white balance after the fact. It also means the files are much bigger, and nothing renders them until software decodes that raw data into a viewable image.
Most people run into NEF files when they pull photos off a Nikon camera and find their photo app, phone, or a website won't open them at all. At that point converting to JPG or another common format is usually the fastest way to actually see, share, or edit the picture.
The trade-offs
Strengths
- Preserves full sensor detail with no lossy compression
- Leaves much more room to adjust exposure and color later
- Keeps the original camera settings alongside the image data
Watch-outs
- Files are far larger than JPG for the same photo
- Won't open in most photo viewers, browsers, or phones
- Needs converting before you can share or print it easily
A note on privacy
A NEF file carries EXIF metadata, including the camera settings and often the GPS location where the photo was taken. Uploading it to an online converter sends that metadata to someone else's server along with the image. Converting it on your own computer keeps the photo and everything attached to it on your machine.

Questions
How do I open a NEF file?
Nikon's own software can open it, and many photo editing programs support NEF as well, but general photo viewers, browsers, and phones usually can't. Converting to JPG or TIFF makes it viewable almost anywhere.
Is NEF better than JPG?
For editing flexibility, yes: NEF keeps far more detail to adjust later. For sharing and everyday viewing, no: JPG opens everywhere, while NEF needs specific software or a conversion first.
Why does my Nikon camera save photos as NEF?
It's the raw format Nikon uses to store the sensor's full output before any processing. Most Nikon cameras let you switch to JPG or shoot both formats at once if you'd rather skip converting later.
Can I convert NEF without uploading it?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts NEF on your own computer, so the raw image and its embedded camera and location data never leave your machine.
Morphjet opens and converts NEF and 1,800+ other formats, all on your own computer. Launching this July.
