Camera RAW conversion

Convert NEF to AVIF

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

NEF is the raw file Nikon cameras save straight off the sensor, and AVIF is a compact next-gen format built for the web. To convert, open the NEF in a converter, let it process the raw data, and export as AVIF. Doing this on your own computer keeps the original file, and its camera metadata, off other people's servers.

How to convert NEF to AVIF

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the NEF files you want to convert. Add one photo or a whole folder at once.
  2. Choose AVIF as the output format, and set a quality level if you want a smaller file.
  3. Convert. The AVIF files are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.

NEF vs AVIF: what actually changes

NEFAVIF
File sizeVery large, tens of megabytes per photoSmall, a fraction of the raw file's size
QualityLossless, every bit of sensor data intactLossy, but efficient enough that loss is hard to spot
CompatibilityNeeds raw-capable photo software, not readable by browsersOpens in most current browsers and photo viewers
Editing latitudeFull range, exposure and white balance can be reworked laterLimited, adjustments are baked in once converted
TransparencyNoYes, though rarely used for photos
Metadata (EXIF)Full camera and shooting data preservedBasic EXIF carries over, raw sensor data does not

When to convert, and when not to

Convert NEF to AVIF once you've finished editing a shot and want to share it online or keep a much smaller copy, since AVIF is built for compact, high-quality web images.

Keep the NEF original if you might want to re-edit the exposure, white balance, or color later, because that raw sensor data is gone once it's converted.

Why not just use an online converter?

NEF files carry full EXIF data from the camera, including the date, shutter settings, and sometimes the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. Uploading a raw file to an online converter sends all of that, plus the untouched sensor data, to someone else's server. Converting on your own computer keeps the photo and everything attached to it on your machine.

Questions

Does converting NEF to AVIF lose quality?

Yes, some. NEF is lossless raw data straight from the sensor, and AVIF compresses the image to save space. The result still looks very good, but you're trading the option to re-edit later for a much smaller file.

Will AVIF keep my photo's location and camera data?

Basic EXIF, like date and camera model, usually carries over. GPS location may too, depending on your settings, so check before sharing publicly. The raw sensor data used for advanced editing does not carry over.

Can I open AVIF files everywhere?

Most current browsers and many modern photo viewers open AVIF without extra software. Older programs and some devices still can't read it, so if you need broad compatibility right now, JPG is safer.

Can I convert NEF to AVIF without uploading my photos?

Yes. Morphjet processes the raw file and converts it right on your computer, so the original photo and its camera data never leave your machine.

Why is my NEF file so much bigger than the AVIF I export?

The NEF holds the complete, unprocessed data from every pixel on the sensor, which is what gives you room to edit later. AVIF discards what the eye won't miss and compresses the rest, so the size difference is expected.

Morphjet converts NEF, AVIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
