Camera RAW conversion
Convert NEF to PSD
Updated Jul 2026
NEF is the raw photo format Nikon cameras save straight from the sensor, and PSD is Photoshop's native file format for editing. Converting renders the raw data into a flat image and saves it as PSD. Doing this on your own computer keeps the original raw file off other people's servers.

How to convert NEF to PSD
- Open Morphjet and drag in the NEF file, or a whole folder of them, straight from your camera's memory card.
- Choose PSD as the output format.
- Convert. The PSD is written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
NEF vs PSD: what actually changes
| NEF | PSD | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Large, raw sensor data, often 20 to 45MB | Larger once rendered, more with added layers |
| Quality | Full sensor detail, unprocessed | High, but color and exposure choices are locked in on export |
| Editable with layers | No | Yes |
| Transparency | No | Supported, though a straight conversion starts as one flat opaque layer |
| Opens where | Needs raw-capable software | Opens in most photo and design apps |
| Keeps camera metadata (EXIF) | Yes | Yes, carried over on export |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert NEF to PSD when you want to hand a Nikon raw photo to someone editing in Photoshop, build layers on top of it, or archive a processed version that opens without a raw import step.
Keep the NEF original if you still want to adjust exposure, white balance, or highlights non-destructively, since converting to PSD bakes those decisions into the pixels.
Why not just use an online converter?
NEF files carry EXIF metadata, including your camera's settings and, on some Nikon bodies, GPS location if it was recorded at the time of the shot. Run that raw photo through an online converter and both the image and that metadata land on someone else's server. Converting on your own computer means the raw file, and everything embedded in it, stays on your machine.
Questions
Does converting NEF to PSD lose quality?
The pixel data itself isn't recompressed, so there's no additional generation loss like a JPG export. What does happen is that the raw sensor data gets rendered into a fixed image, so choices like white balance and exposure are baked in rather than staying adjustable.
Will the PSD come with layers already?
No. A straight conversion gives you a single flattened layer. You can add masks, adjustment layers, or more images on top once it's open in Photoshop.
Does the PSD keep my camera's metadata?
Yes. The EXIF data recorded by your Nikon, like date, settings, and lens, carries over to the PSD on export.
Can I convert NEF to PSD without uploading my photos?
Yes. Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the raw photo never travels over the internet. It works the same with your wifi off.
Why not just open the NEF directly in Photoshop?
You can, most Nikon raw files open fine that way. Converting to PSD ahead of time is useful when you want a file that opens instantly without a raw processing dialog, or when you're sending it to someone without raw support.
Morphjet converts NEF, PSD, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
