Convert DOC to PDF

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

DOC is the old Microsoft Word format, and PDF is the format almost anyone can open and expect to look the same on any screen or printer. To convert DOC to PDF, open the file in a converter and export it as PDF. Doing this on your own computer means the document, and any author or edit history saved inside it, never gets uploaded anywhere.

How to convert DOC to PDF

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the DOC file, or a whole folder of old Word documents at once.
  2. Choose PDF as the output format.
  3. Convert. The PDF is written next to the original, and nothing leaves your machine.

DOC vs PDF: what actually changes

DOCPDF
Opens everywhereNo, needs Word or a compatible appYes, opens the same on almost any device
Editable textYes, easilyNot meant to be, though some apps allow it
Looks the same on every screenCan shift depending on fonts installedYes, layout is fixed
File sizeSmaller for text-heavy documentsSimilar, sometimes slightly larger with images
Keeps author and edit metadataYesYes, unless you strip it

When to convert, and when not to

Convert DOC to PDF when you're sending a document to someone else, printing it, submitting it somewhere official, or want to make sure the formatting can't shift on another computer.

Keep the DOC if you or someone else still needs to edit the text, since converting to PDF is meant for a finished, read-only version.

Why not just use an online converter?

Old Word documents often carry the author's name, company, and a record of past edits buried in the file, even after you think you've cleaned it up. An online converter receives all of that along with the document itself. Converting on your own computer means the file and everything saved inside it stay on your machine.

Questions

Does converting DOC to PDF change the formatting?

Usually not, as long as the fonts used in the document are available on the computer doing the conversion. The point of PDF is to lock in the layout so it looks the same everywhere afterward.

Will the PDF keep the author name and edit history from the DOC?

Often, yes. Word documents can carry metadata like the author's name and revision details, and that can carry over into the PDF unless it's stripped during conversion.

Can I still edit a PDF after converting from DOC?

Not the way you'd edit a Word document. PDF is meant to be a fixed, finished version, so if you need to keep editing the text, hold onto the original DOC.

Why do old files still use DOC instead of DOCX?

DOC is the format Word used before 2007, and plenty of older files, templates, and archives are still saved in it. Converting to PDF is a common way to make an old DOC readable and shareable without needing Word at all.

Can I convert DOC to PDF without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never travels over the internet, even with your wifi off.

Morphjet converts DOC, PDF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
