Convert DOCX to EPUB
Updated Jul 2026
DOCX is the file format Word saves documents in, and EPUB is the format e-readers and reading apps expect. To convert, open the DOCX in a converter and export it as EPUB, which reflows the text to fit any screen. Doing this on your own computer keeps the document off someone else's server.

How to convert DOCX to EPUB
- Open Morphjet and drag in the DOCX file you want to convert. Add one document or a whole folder at once.
- Choose EPUB as the output format.
- Convert. The EPUB is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
DOCX vs EPUB: what actually changes
| DOCX | EPUB | |
|---|---|---|
| Reads on e-readers | No, not natively supported by most e-reader apps or devices | Yes, the standard format most e-readers and reading apps expect |
| Page layout | Fixed, pages and line breaks stay exactly where you set them | Reflows to fit whatever screen size or font the reader picks |
| File size | Larger, keeps full formatting and embedded fonts | Smaller, mostly plain text and structure |
| Quality | Lossless | Lossless |
| Editable | Yes, in a word processor | Limited, built for reading rather than editing |
| Metadata kept | Yes, author name, edit history, comments | Basic title and author info carries over, edit history is dropped |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert DOCX to EPUB when you want to read a long document, manuscript, or report on a phone, tablet, or e-reader instead of scrolling through a Word file.
Keep the DOCX if you still need to edit the text, track changes, or preserve an exact printed page layout, since EPUB reflows around the reader's screen and isn't built for editing.
Why not just use an online converter?
Word documents often carry hidden metadata, like the author's name, the computer it was written on, past edit history, and sometimes comments that were never meant to be seen. Sending that file to an online converter means all of that travels along with the text to someone else's server. Converting on your own computer keeps the document, and everything embedded in it, on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting DOCX to EPUB lose any formatting?
The text and structure carry over intact, since both formats are lossless, but EPUB reflows content to fit the screen, so exact page breaks, margins, and precise positioning from the DOCX won't survive in the same way.
Will my Word document's author info and comments show up in the EPUB?
Basic metadata like title and author usually carries over, but editing history, tracked changes, and comments are generally dropped, since EPUB isn't built to hold them.
Can I read the EPUB on a Kindle?
EPUB works directly with Apple Books, most e-readers, and reading apps, though Kindle devices traditionally use their own format, so check whether your specific device or app needs an extra step.
Can I convert DOCX to EPUB without uploading the file?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the document never has to travel over the internet to do it.
Is EPUB good for documents with lots of tables or images?
Simple layouts convert well, but documents with complex tables, multiple columns, or precise image placement may look different once reflowed, since EPUB is built for flowing text rather than fixed pages.
Morphjet converts DOCX, EPUB, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
