Convert HEIC to BMP

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

HEIC is the compressed photo format iPhones save by default, and BMP is the uncompressed bitmap format older Windows software expects. To convert HEIC to BMP, open the file in a converter and export it as BMP. Doing this on your own computer means the photo never has to leave your machine to reach a server somewhere else.

How to convert HEIC to BMP

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the HEIC photos you want to convert. Add a single file or a whole folder at once.
  2. Choose BMP as the output format.
  3. Convert. The BMP files are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.

HEIC vs BMP: what actually changes

HEICBMP
Opens everywhereNo, needs a recent Apple device or pluginYes on Windows, less common elsewhere
File sizeSmall, modern compressionMuch larger, often 5 to 10 times bigger
QualityHigh, but lossy compressionLossless, but can't restore detail HEIC already discarded
CompressionYes, efficientNone, stores every pixel raw
Keeps date and location (EXIF)YesNo, BMP doesn't store this metadata

When to convert, and when not to

Convert HEIC to BMP when an older Windows program, a legacy business tool, or a piece of hardware only accepts BMP and won't read HEIC or even JPG.

Keep a compressed format like JPG or PNG instead if you're sharing or archiving photos, since BMP files are far larger for no real gain in everyday quality.

Why not just use an online converter?

HEIC photos from an iPhone usually carry EXIF data, including the exact location where they were taken. Even though BMP itself won't keep that metadata, an online converter still receives the original HEIC, location data and all, the moment you upload it. Converting on your own computer means that file never travels anywhere to be read.

Questions

Does converting HEIC to BMP lose quality?

The BMP itself is lossless, so nothing is discarded during that step. But HEIC is a lossy format, so any compression it already applied is baked in, and BMP just stores that result without compressing it further.

Why is the BMP file so much bigger than the HEIC?

BMP doesn't compress the image at all, it stores every pixel directly. HEIC uses modern compression to shrink the same photo considerably, which is why the BMP version can end up many times larger.

Will the BMP keep the photo's date and location?

No. BMP is an old format that doesn't have a place to store EXIF metadata, so the date, camera, and GPS location saved in the HEIC won't carry over.

Why would I need BMP instead of a more common format?

Mostly for compatibility with older Windows software, embedded systems, or specific tools built before formats like PNG and JPG were standard. For everyday sharing, BMP isn't usually the right choice.

Can I convert HEIC to BMP without uploading my photos?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never has to travel over the internet. You could disconnect from wifi and it would still work.
