Convert HEIF to PNG
Updated Jul 2026
HEIF is the compressed photo format used by Apple devices, and PNG is a lossless format that any editor, browser, or design tool can open without surprises. To convert HEIF to PNG, open the file in a converter and export it as PNG. Doing this on your own computer means the photo, along with any location data it carries, never gets sent anywhere.

How to convert HEIF to PNG

- Choose PNG as the output format.
- Convert. The PNGs are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
HEIF vs PNG: what actually changes
| HEIF | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, needs a recent Apple device or plugin | Yes, universal support |
| File size | Smaller, efficient compression | Larger, often several times bigger |
| Quality | High, but lossy compression | Lossless, exact pixel copy of what was converted |
| Transparency | No | Yes |
| Best for | Photos taken on an iPhone or iPad | Screenshots, logos, and graphics with sharp edges |
| Keeps date and location (EXIF) | Yes | Yes, unless you strip it |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert HEIF to PNG when you need to edit the image in a tool that expects lossless input, layer it over other graphics, or work with something that has transparency, sharp lines, or text where you don't want any recompression artifacts.
If you're just converting an ordinary photo for sharing or upload, PNG will make the file much larger for no real quality benefit, since the HEIF source was already a photo, not artwork with flat colors or transparency.
Why not just use an online converter?
Photos in HEIF format usually carry EXIF metadata, including the exact time and GPS location where they were taken. An online converter receives that metadata along with the image the moment you upload it. Converting on your own computer with Morphjet means the photo, and everything attached to it, stays on your machine.
Questions
Does converting HEIF to PNG lose quality?
No, not from the conversion itself. PNG is lossless, so it stores exactly what's decoded from the HEIF file without adding any new compression loss. The image just becomes a larger file.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the original HEIF?
HEIF uses efficient lossy compression to keep photos small, while PNG stores every pixel without throwing anything away. That trade-off is normal and expected, especially for photos rather than simple graphics.
Will the PNG keep the photo's date and location?
Yes, if the metadata is present in the source file, most converters carry it over to the PNG unless you choose to strip it. Worth checking before you share the file publicly.
Should I use PNG or JPG when converting from HEIF?
Use PNG if you need transparency or lossless quality for editing, and JPG if you just want a smaller, universally compatible file for sharing. For most everyday photos, JPG is the more practical choice.
Can I convert HEIF to PNG without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts HEIF, PNG, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
