Convert M4V to GIF

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

M4V is Apple's video format, usually with sound and full color, while GIF is a short, silent, looping animation that plays anywhere without a video player. To convert, open the M4V in a converter, trim it to the clip you want, and export as GIF. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to leave your machine.

How to convert M4V to GIF

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the M4V file, or a whole folder of clips at once.
  2. Choose GIF as the output format, and pick the section of the video you want if you only need a few seconds.
  3. Convert. The GIF is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

Good for long clipsYesNo, file size grows fast past a few seconds
TransparencyNoYes, GIF supports a transparent background

When to convert, and when not to

Convert M4V to GIF when you want a short, silent, looping clip to drop into a chat, a webpage, or a slide deck, somewhere a video file wouldn't play on its own.

Keep the M4V if the clip has sound, runs longer than a few seconds, or has smooth color gradients, since GIF drops the audio and its limited color palette will show banding.

Why not just use an online converter?

Turning a video into a GIF usually means picking the exact moment you want to share, whether that's a personal clip, something from work, or a moment with people in it. An online converter uploads the whole video to a stranger's server to do that trimming. Converting on your own computer keeps the clip, and everyone in it, off the internet entirely.

Questions

Does the GIF keep the sound from the M4V?

No. GIF has no audio track at all, so any sound in the M4V is dropped. If you need the audio, keep the video in its original format or export a separate audio file.

Will the GIF look as sharp as the M4V?

Not quite. GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, so smooth gradients like skies or skin tones can show visible banding that wasn't there in the M4V. For flat colors or simple footage, the difference is minor.

Why does my GIF end up bigger than the original video?

Video formats like M4V compress motion very efficiently, while GIF stores color changes frame by frame with a small color palette. A few seconds of clip can easily turn into a GIF several times the size of the source.

Is there a limit to how long the GIF can be?

No hard limit, but file size climbs fast with length and frame count, so GIFs work best for clips of a few seconds rather than full videos.

Can I convert M4V to GIF without uploading the video anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally on your own computer, so the clip never travels over the internet, even with your wifi off.

Morphjet converts M4V, GIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
