Convert MPEG to OGG

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

MPEG is a video format, and OGG (Ogg Vorbis) is an audio-only format, so converting between them means pulling the sound out of the video and saving it as a standalone audio file. The picture is dropped entirely. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to be uploaded anywhere to get the audio out.

How to convert MPEG to OGG

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the MPEG file, or a whole folder of them, that you want to pull audio from.
  2. Choose OGG as the output format.
  3. Convert. Morphjet extracts the audio track and encodes it as Ogg Vorbis, writing the result next to your original, nothing leaves your machine.

MPEG vs OGG: what actually changes

MPEGOGG
ContainsVideo and audio togetherAudio only, no picture
File sizeLarge, mostly driven by the videoMuch smaller, since only the sound remains
QualityLossy, quality set by the original broadcast or DVD encodeLossy, and re-encoding an already-compressed audio track adds a small further loss
CompatibilityPlays on DVD players, TVs, and most video softwarePlays in media players and games built to support it, less consistent support on phones
Typical useBroadcast video, DVD releasesGame audio, community-built media players

When to convert, and when not to

Convert MPEG to OGG when all you actually want is the sound from a video, like a music track, narration, or audio to drop into a game, and you don't need the picture at all.

Keep the MPEG if you need the video portion for anything, because converting to OGG throws the picture away for good.

Why not just use an online converter?

An online converter needs your MPEG file on its server before it can hand back an OGG, which means a video that might show your face, your home, or your voice sits on a machine you don't control while it's processed. Converting on your own computer keeps that footage local the whole time, only the extracted audio file exists at the end, and it never had to leave your machine to get there.

Questions

Will I still have the video after converting MPEG to OGG?

No. OGG is an audio-only format, so the picture is discarded during conversion. If you need the video too, keep the original MPEG around.

Does converting MPEG to OGG lose quality?

A little. The audio in your MPEG is already lossy, and encoding it again as Ogg Vorbis adds a further, usually small, round of compression on top.

Will the OGG file play everywhere?

It plays reliably in software and games built to support it, but it isn't the default audio format on iPhones or in some mainstream media players, so check your target device first.

Can I pull audio out of an MPEG without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet extracts and encodes the audio on your own computer, so the video file never travels over the internet.
