Convert WMV to FLAC

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

WMV is a Windows video format, and FLAC is a lossless audio format with no video in it at all. Converting WMV to FLAC pulls the audio track out of the video and saves it as a standalone lossless audio file. You can do this on your own computer, with the video never uploaded to anyone else's server.

How to convert WMV to FLAC

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the WMV file, or a whole folder of them, at once.
  2. Choose FLAC as the output format. Morphjet extracts the audio track automatically, no separate step needed.
  3. Convert. The FLAC file is written next to your original, and the video never leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert WMV to FLAC when you only care about the sound, like a recorded lecture, a screen capture with narration, or a concert video, and you want to keep it as a proper lossless audio file for listening or archiving.

Keep the WMV if you still need to watch the video, since converting to FLAC keeps the audio but throws away the picture entirely.

Why not just use an online converter?

Recorded lectures, meetings, and personal videos often aren't things you want sitting on someone else's server just to pull the audio out. An online converter uploads the whole WMV file, video and all, before handing back an audio file. Morphjet extracts the audio on your own computer, so the video, and whatever it shows, never leaves your machine.

Questions

Does converting WMV to FLAC lose quality?

The audio track inside the WMV is usually already compressed, so that earlier compression can't be undone. But the conversion to FLAC itself is lossless, meaning nothing further is lost once the audio is extracted.

Will I get the video too, or just the audio?

Just the audio. FLAC has no video component, so converting WMV to FLAC discards the picture and keeps only the sound.

Does the FLAC file keep track info like title or artist?

FLAC supports full metadata tags, but a WMV usually only has a title and basic file info to begin with. You may need to add artist and album details yourself after converting.

Can I convert WMV to FLAC without uploading the video?

Yes. Morphjet extracts the audio and converts it on your own computer, so the video file never travels over the internet.

Will the FLAC play on my phone?

Most modern phones and music apps support FLAC, but not all of them do by default. Check your particular music player if you're not sure.
