What is a TGA file?
Updated Jul 2026
TGA (Truevision TGA, also called Targa) is an image format built for storing bitmap graphics without losing quality. It supports transparency through an alpha channel, which made it a favorite for game textures and visual effects work. Its main limitation is that it produces much larger files than compressed formats and isn't recognized by most everyday apps.

Why TGA exists
TGA dates back to the 1980s, created by Truevision for its graphics cards. It was one of the first formats to support true color images and an alpha channel for transparency, which made it useful well beyond its original hardware.
The format works by storing pixel data with little to no compression, so nothing about the image is thrown away. That's why it became a standard in game development and 3D rendering: textures need every pixel of detail and a clean transparency channel, and TGA delivers both in a simple, predictable file structure.
Most people run into TGA today through game files, modding tools, or assets exported from 3D or design software. Since browsers, photo apps, and most operating systems don't display TGA natively, it usually needs converting to PNG or JPG before it can be viewed, shared, or edited normally.
The trade-offs
Strengths
- Lossless, so image quality never degrades
- Supports a true alpha channel for clean transparency
- Simple, well-documented format still used in game pipelines
- Handles high color depth well
Watch-outs
- Much larger files than compressed formats like PNG or JPG
- Not viewable in most web browsers or photo apps
- Rarely supported for sharing online or on social media
- Feels dated outside of game and 3D asset workflows
A note on privacy
TGA files don't typically carry the kind of location or device metadata that photo formats like HEIC do, since they're usually generated by software rather than a camera. Still, any online converter requires uploading the file to someone else's server, which matters if it's an unreleased game asset or proprietary artwork. Converting on your own machine keeps that file, and whatever it reveals about a project, off the internet entirely.
Questions
How do I open a TGA file?
Most game engines and 3D software open TGA directly. For everyday viewing on Mac or Windows, you'll usually need to convert it to PNG or JPG first, since standard photo viewers don't support it.
Is TGA better than PNG?
Both are lossless, but TGA files are typically larger and far less compatible. PNG is the better choice for anything you plan to view in a browser or share online; TGA still holds its place in game and rendering pipelines.
Why do game assets use TGA?
Game textures need lossless detail and a reliable alpha channel for transparency, and TGA has supported both cleanly for decades, which is why the format stuck around in game development.
Can I convert TGA without uploading it?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts TGA files on your own computer, so game assets or project files never leave your machine.
Morphjet opens and converts TGA and 1,800+ other formats, all on your own computer. Launching this July.
