Convert 3GP to WAV

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

3GP is the small, low-quality video format older mobile phones used to save video and voice clips. To pull the audio out as WAV, open the 3GP file in a converter and export just the sound as an uncompressed WAV file. Doing this on your own computer means the clip, which might be a personal voicemail or recording, never has to leave your machine.

How to convert 3GP to WAV

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the 3GP file or clips you want to convert. You can add a whole folder at once.
  2. Choose WAV as the output format. This pulls the audio track out and leaves the video behind.
  3. Convert. The WAV file is written next to your original, and nothing is sent over the internet.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert 3GP to WAV when you have an old phone recording, voicemail, or voice memo and you need the audio on its own in a format that editing software, transcription tools, or any computer can open without fuss.

If you actually want to keep watching the video part, don't convert to WAV, since it keeps only the sound and throws away the picture.

Why not just use an online converter?

3GP clips from old phones are often personal, a voicemail, a recorded call, a quick video of family. Uploading one to an online converter means that recording sits on a server you don't control, even if only briefly. Converting on your own computer means the file goes from 3GP to WAV without ever leaving your machine.

Questions

Does converting 3GP to WAV make the audio sound better?

No. WAV stores audio without compression, but it can only preserve what's already in the 3GP file. If the original recording is low quality, the WAV will be an exact, larger copy of that same low quality, not an improvement.

Will the video be included in the WAV file?

No. WAV is an audio-only format, so converting 3GP to WAV keeps just the sound and discards the video track entirely. If you need the video too, keep the original 3GP.

Why is the WAV file so much bigger than the 3GP?

3GP compresses audio heavily to keep file sizes small for old phones with limited storage. WAV stores audio uncompressed, so even a short clip can end up many times larger.

Can I convert 3GP to WAV without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally on your computer, so it's never sent over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.

Will the converted WAV work on both Mac and Windows?

Yes. WAV is a long-standing standard supported by essentially every audio player, editor, and operating system, unlike 3GP, which was built specifically for older mobile phones.
