Convert AVIF to PNG
Updated Jul 2026
AVIF is a newer, heavily compressed image format used by some websites and cameras, while PNG is the older format that just about every editor, design tool, and browser opens without question. To convert AVIF to PNG, open the file in a converter and export it as PNG. Doing that on your own computer means the image never has to leave your machine.

AVIF vs PNG: what actually changes
| AVIF | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, needs a fairly recent browser or app | Yes, opens in nearly any image tool |
| File size | Small, heavily compressed | Larger, often several times the size |
| Quality | Good, but lossy compression discards some detail | Exact, no compression loss |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Editing support | Limited in older or non-web software | Supported by virtually every editor |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert AVIF to PNG when you need to open the image in software that doesn't recognize AVIF, edit it in a design tool, or use it as a screenshot, logo, or UI asset where exact pixels matter more than file size.
Keep the AVIF original if it's just going to live on a website, since it's already smaller and looks fine there, and converting to PNG will only make the file bigger without adding any quality back.
Why not just use an online converter?
AVIF files often come from cameras, screen recordings, or downloads you'd rather not hand over to a third party just to change the format. Running the conversion through an online tool means uploading that file to a server you don't control. Doing it on your own computer keeps the image, and whatever it shows, on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting AVIF to PNG improve the quality?
No. PNG can't add back detail that AVIF's compression already discarded. It locks in whatever quality the AVIF had, just without any further loss on top.
Why can't I open my AVIF file in some programs?
AVIF is newer than PNG, so plenty of design tools, older operating systems, and image viewers simply haven't added support for it yet. Converting to PNG sidesteps the problem.
Will the PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Both formats support transparency, so any transparent areas in the AVIF carry straight over to the PNG.
Is the PNG file going to be a lot bigger?
Usually, yes. AVIF is built for small file sizes, and PNG is lossless, so the same image can easily end up several times larger as a PNG.
Can I convert AVIF to PNG without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never travels over the internet or sits on someone else's server.
Morphjet converts AVIF, PNG, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
