Convert FLV to MP3
Updated Jul 2026
FLV is an old Flash video format, and MP3 is the standard for audio. To convert FLV to MP3, open the file in a converter and pull out just the audio track, discarding the video image. Doing this on your own computer means the file never has to travel to someone else's server first.

How to convert FLV to MP3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the FLV file or a whole folder of them at once.
- Choose MP3 as the output format. Morphjet will pull the audio track out and leave the video behind.
- Convert. The MP3s are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
FLV vs MP3: what actually changes
| FLV | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains | Video and audio together | Audio only |
| File size | Large, video dominates the size | Much smaller, often a tenth the size or less |
| Opens everywhere | No, tied to Flash and now largely obsolete | Yes, universal support on every device |
| Quality | Lossy video and audio | Lossy, with a small re-encoding loss when pulled from FLV |
| Song or track tags | No real tagging support | Yes, supports title, artist, and album tags (ID3) |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert FLV to MP3 when the video itself doesn't matter and you just want the sound, like an interview, lecture, song, or podcast that happens to be sitting in an old Flash video file.
Keep the FLV (or convert it to a modern video format instead) if you actually want to watch the picture, because converting to MP3 throws the video away for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
Old FLV files often sit around from years-ago downloads or recordings, and running them through a website converter means uploading that video, and whatever it shows, to a server you don't control. Converting on your own computer keeps the file, and its contents, entirely on your machine, no upload required.
Questions
Does converting FLV to MP3 keep the video?
No. MP3 is audio only, so the video image is discarded and only the sound is kept. If you need the picture too, convert to a video format instead.
Does converting FLV to MP3 lose audio quality?
There's a small loss. The audio track gets re-encoded from whatever compressed format it was stored in inside the FLV, so you're compressing an already-compressed file. For speech or casual listening it's not noticeable.
Why is FLV hard to open these days?
FLV was built around Adobe Flash, which browsers and operating systems have phased out over the past several years. Most current players and devices no longer handle it directly, which is why people convert old FLV files to something else.
Will the MP3 have a title and artist tag?
MP3 supports those tags, but FLV files usually don't carry any metadata beyond a filename, so there's often nothing to carry over automatically. You can add title and artist tags yourself after converting.
Can I convert FLV to MP3 without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet reads the FLV and writes the MP3 locally, so the file never leaves your computer or touches the internet.
Morphjet converts FLV, MP3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
