Convert FLV to OGG
Updated Jul 2026
FLV is an old video format built for Flash-based web players, and OGG is an audio-only format used by games and open audio players. Converting FLV to OGG pulls the sound track out of the video and drops the picture. You can do this on your own computer, without uploading the file anywhere first.

How to convert FLV to OGG
- Open Morphjet and drag in the FLV file, or a whole folder of clips, to convert several at once.
- Choose OGG as the output format. Since OGG only holds audio, Morphjet pulls the sound track out of the video for you.
- Convert. The OGG file is written next to your original, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
FLV vs OGG: what actually changes
| FLV | OGG | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains picture | Yes, video and audio together | No, audio only |
| File size | Large, holds both video and audio | Much smaller, audio only |
| Audio quality | Lossy, older compression | Lossy, but efficient for its size |
| Opens everywhere | No, built for Flash, which browsers dropped years ago | Widely supported by media players and games, though not native on iPhone |
| Common use | Old web video, downloaded clips | Game audio, music, open media players |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert FLV to OGG when you only want the audio from an old Flash video, like a talk, a lecture, or a music clip, and you don't need the picture.
Keep the FLV if you need the video portion too, since converting to OGG throws the picture away for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
FLV files are often old recordings, downloaded clips, or personal video you'd rather not hand to a stranger's server just to pull out the audio. Most online converters require you to upload the whole video before they'll extract anything from it. Converting on your own computer keeps that file, and whatever it shows, off the network entirely.
Questions
Will converting FLV to OGG keep the video?
No, and that's expected. OGG is an audio-only format, so the conversion keeps the sound and drops the picture for good. If you need the video too, convert to a modern video format instead.
Does converting FLV to OGG lose audio quality?
A little. Both FLV's audio and OGG are lossy, so there's some recompression happening. For spoken word or casual listening it's rarely noticeable.
Can I even open FLV files anymore?
Not easily. FLV was built for the Flash Player, which browsers stopped supporting years ago, so most modern devices and apps won't play it directly.
Does OGG play on every device?
It's widely supported on Windows, Linux, and in many games and media players, but it isn't native on iPhone or in Apple's own apps.
Can I convert FLV to OGG without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet does the conversion on your own computer, so the file never has to travel over the internet to get converted.
Morphjet converts FLV, OGG, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
