Convert FLV to WebM
Updated Jul 2026
FLV is the old Flash video format many downloaded clips and screen recordings still sit in, and WebM is the modern format built for today's browsers. To convert FLV to WebM, open the file in a converter and export it as WebM. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to be uploaded to someone else's server first.

How to convert FLV to WebM

- Choose WebM as the output format.
- Convert. The WebM file is written right next to the original, and nothing leaves your machine.
FLV vs WebM: what actually changes
| FLV | WebM | |
|---|---|---|
| Plays in modern browsers | No, Flash is discontinued | Yes, native support in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge |
| File size | Larger for the same quality, older compression | Smaller, modern compression |
| Quality | Lossy, limited by older codecs | Lossy, but modern encoding holds up better at a smaller size |
| Built for | Flash Player streaming, now defunct | HTML5 video on the modern web |
| Editing software support | Limited, mostly older tools | Widely supported in current video editors |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert FLV to WebM when you have old Flash-era clips, downloaded videos, or screen recordings and want them to actually play in a browser or embed on a website again.
If the FLV file already plays fine in the one old player you keep around for it and you have no need to share or embed it, there's no real reason to convert.
Why not just use an online converter?
FLV files are often old screen recordings, downloaded clips, or personal video that never made it off a hard drive. Uploading one to a web-based converter means a copy of it sits on a stranger's server, even if just briefly. Converting on your own computer keeps the video exactly where it already is, just in a format that plays.
Questions
Does converting FLV to WebM lose quality?
Some. Going from one lossy format to another always involves a re-encode, but because WebM's compression is more efficient than FLV's older codecs, the result often looks just as good, or better, at a smaller file size.
Will the WebM file play everywhere?
It plays natively in modern browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, and in most current media players. Some older software or Windows Media Player may need an extra codec installed.
Why do I even have FLV files anymore?
FLV was the standard format for Flash video, which was discontinued in 2020. Old downloads, saved web videos, and recordings made with older software often ended up in FLV and were never converted since.
Can I convert FLV to WebM without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it's never sent over the internet. It works the same with your wifi off.
Does the audio carry over correctly?
Yes, in almost all cases. The audio track is re-encoded along with the video, and the result should sound the same as the original.
Morphjet converts FLV, WebM, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
