Convert Markdown to PDF
Updated Jul 2026
Markdown is plain text with light formatting marks, and PDF is a fixed, page-based document that looks the same everywhere you open it. To convert Markdown to PDF, open the file in a converter and export it as PDF. Doing this on your own computer means the notes, docs, or README never have to leave your machine to get formatted.

Markdown vs PDF: what actually changes
| Markdown | ||
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | Needs a text editor or Markdown viewer to render properly | Yes, opens the same way on any computer, phone, or printer |
| Editability | Easy, it's plain text | Hard, meant for reading and printing, not editing |
| File size | Very small, just text | Larger, since it stores layout and fonts |
| Formatting | Renders differently depending on the viewer | Looks identical everywhere, headings, lists, and code blocks are locked in place |
| Metadata | None beyond the text itself | Can carry title, author, and other document metadata |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert Markdown to PDF when you need to send someone a finished, read-only document, print it, or attach a README or set of notes to an email in a form that looks the same on every device.
Keep the Markdown file if you or a collaborator still need to edit the content, since PDF is meant for reading and printing, not for going back in and changing text.
Why not just use an online converter?
Markdown files often hold drafts, internal docs, or notes you haven't shared widely yet. An online converter means uploading that text to a server you don't control just to get a PDF back. Converting on your own computer keeps the file, and whatever it says, on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting Markdown to PDF lose any formatting?
No, if the converter understands standard Markdown. Headings, lists, links, and code blocks carry over, they just get locked into a fixed page layout instead of rendering differently depending on the viewer.
Can I still edit the file after converting it to PDF?
Not easily. PDF is meant to be a finished, read-only document. Keep the original Markdown file if you expect to make further changes.
Will the PDF keep things like the document title?
Yes, PDF supports document metadata like a title and author, though a Markdown file itself doesn't store that beyond its filename and content.
Can I convert Markdown to PDF without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never has to travel over the internet to get turned into a PDF.
Can I convert a whole folder of Markdown notes at once?
Yes, you can drag in a whole folder and convert every file to PDF in one pass instead of doing them one at a time.
Morphjet converts Markdown, PDF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
