Convert MPEG to M4V
Updated Jul 2026
MPEG is an older broadcast and DVD video format, and M4V is the video format Apple's software and devices expect, especially for adding movies or home videos into a library. To convert MPEG to M4V, open the file in a converter and export it as M4V. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to be uploaded anywhere to make the switch.

How to convert MPEG to M4V
- Open Morphjet and drag in the MPEG file, or a whole folder of them, to convert several at once.
- Choose M4V as the output format.
- Convert. The M4V file is written next to your original, and the video never leaves your machine.
MPEG vs M4V: what actually changes
| MPEG | M4V | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | Yes, plays in most video software and standalone DVD players | Best on Apple devices and software, more limited elsewhere |
| File size | Larger, older compression | Smaller, more efficient compression for the same length |
| Quality | Depends on the source, often DVD or broadcast quality | Very good, with a small re-encoding loss on conversion |
| Chapters and artwork | No | Yes, supports chapter markers and cover artwork |
| Streaming and seeking | Clunky, not built for scrubbing through long files | Smooth, designed for jumping around in a video |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert MPEG to M4V when you want to bring an old home video, a ripped DVD, or a downloaded clip into an Apple-friendly library where it will play smoothly and show up with proper chapters and artwork.
Keep the MPEG original if it came straight from a DVD or a camera and you want an unaltered archival copy, since converting to M4V involves re-encoding and a small, permanent quality trade.
Why not just use an online converter?
Home videos and personal recordings are exactly the kind of file you don't want sitting on someone else's server while it gets converted. An online converter has to receive the whole video before it can hand back an M4V. Converting on your own computer means the footage stays on your machine the entire time.
Questions
Does converting MPEG to M4V lose quality?
There's a small, one-time loss because the video gets re-encoded. For everyday viewing it's usually not noticeable, but if the MPEG is your only copy of something irreplaceable, keep it as a backup.
Will M4V play on a Windows PC?
It can, with the right video software, but M4V is built around Apple's ecosystem and plays most reliably on Apple devices. If you mainly use Windows, MPEG or a more universal format may serve you better.
Does M4V keep chapter markers from a DVD rip?
M4V supports chapters and artwork, but whether they carry over depends on whether the MPEG had that information to begin with. A plain MPEG usually doesn't, so you may need to add them separately.
Can I convert MPEG to M4V without uploading the video?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so the video never has to travel over the internet. It works even without a connection.
Morphjet converts MPEG, M4V, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
