Convert MPEG to MP3
Updated Jul 2026
MPEG is a video format used on DVDs and older broadcast equipment, and MP3 is the audio-only format almost anything can play. To convert MPEG to MP3, pull the audio track out of the video and save it as MP3. Doing this on your own computer means the file never has to leave your machine to get turned into something you can actually play.

How to convert MPEG to MP3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the MPEG file, or a whole folder of them, if you're pulling audio from several videos at once.
- Choose MP3 as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet reads the audio track out of the video and writes the MP3 next to your original, all on your computer.
MPEG vs MP3: what actually changes
| MPEG | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains video | Yes | No, audio only |
| File size | Much larger, video dominates the size | Much smaller, often a fraction of the original |
| Quality | Lossy, quality set when the video was made | Lossy, with a small additional loss on top of the source audio |
| Opens everywhere | Needs a video player | Yes, plays on essentially any phone, computer, or speaker |
| Metadata | Little to none beyond basic file info | Can hold title, artist, and album tags |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert MPEG to MP3 when you only want the sound from a video, like a lecture, interview, concert, or DVD extra, and don't need the picture at all.
Keep the MPEG if you still want the video itself, since converting to MP3 throws the picture away for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
A lecture recording, an old home video, or a DVD rip can contain someone's voice or likeness that you'd rather not hand to an unfamiliar server just to strip out the audio. Converting MPEG to MP3 on your own computer means the video file stays put the whole time. Nothing gets uploaded, and nothing sits on someone else's storage waiting to be forgotten about.
Questions
Does converting MPEG to MP3 lose quality?
The video's original audio was already compressed when it was made, and MP3 adds a further, small round of lossy compression on top. For speech and most everyday audio it's not noticeable, but it's not a lossless copy.
Will I still have the video after converting?
Only if you keep the original MPEG file. Converting to MP3 creates a new audio-only file and doesn't touch or delete the source video, but the picture isn't part of the MP3 at all.
Can I convert just part of a long MPEG file to MP3?
Morphjet converts the whole file's audio track in one pass. If you only need a section, trim the video first with any video editor, then convert the trimmed clip.
Can I convert MPEG to MP3 without uploading the video?
Yes. Morphjet does the extraction and conversion locally on your Mac or PC, so the video never has to leave your computer or go through anyone else's server.
Morphjet converts MPEG, MP3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
