Convert WebP to BMP

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

WebP is the compressed image format many websites use, and BMP is the uncompressed bitmap format built into Windows. To convert WebP to BMP, open the file in a converter and export it as BMP. Doing this on your own computer means the image never has to leave your machine to reach another server first.

How to convert WebP to BMP

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the WebP images you want to convert. Add a single file or a whole folder at once.
  2. Choose BMP as the output format.
  3. Convert. The BMP files are written right next to your originals, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.

WebP vs BMP: what actually changes

WebPBMP
Opens everywhereNo, needs a modern browser or recent appYes, opens in nearly any Windows image tool, even very old ones
File sizeSmall, compressed for the webMuch larger, stores every pixel uncompressed
QualityGood, with a small compression loss when savedNo further loss on export, it just stores what's there
TransparencyYes, supports a transparent backgroundNo, transparent areas get filled in with a solid color
Typical useWeb pages, apps, modern image pipelinesLegacy Windows software, older printing or scanning tools

When to convert, and when not to

Convert WebP to BMP when an older program, a piece of Windows software, or a device only accepts BMP files and won't open WebP at all.

Keep the WebP if the file is headed back to a website or app, since BMP is far larger for no real gain and drops any transparency the image had.

Why not just use an online converter?

Most WebP to BMP converters online ask you to upload the image to their server, convert it there, and send it back. That means a copy of your file passes through a computer you don't control. Converting on your own machine skips that step entirely, the image is read, converted, and saved without ever touching the internet.

Questions

Does converting WebP to BMP lose quality?

The conversion itself doesn't lose anything, BMP just stores the pixels as they are with no compression. Any quality loss already happened when the image was first saved as WebP, and that part can't be undone.

Why is the BMP file so much bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses the image to save space, while BMP stores every pixel uncompressed. A photo that's a few hundred kilobytes as WebP can easily become several megabytes as BMP.

What happens to a transparent WebP when it becomes a BMP?

Standard BMP has no transparency support, so any see-through areas get filled in with a solid background color, usually white. If you need to keep transparency, PNG is a better target than BMP.

Is BMP still used for anything?

Yes, mostly in older Windows software, some scanning and printing tools, and systems built before compressed formats were common. It's rarely the right choice for anything new, but plenty of legacy programs still expect it.

Can I convert WebP to BMP without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally on your Mac or PC, so it never travels over the internet. It works the same with your wifi turned off.

Morphjet converts WebP, BMP, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
