Vector conversion
Convert WMF to PNG
WMF is an old Windows format used for clipart and vector graphics in Office documents. PNG is a raster image format that opens everywhere and supports transparency. To convert, open the WMF file in a converter and export it as PNG, turning the vector graphic into pixels, right on your own computer without uploading anything.
All 2,748 conversions verified on macOS, Windows, and Linux against the shipping release, this one included. Every conversion runs entirely on your own computer.

WMF vs PNG: what actually changes
| WMF | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, mostly limited to Windows and Office | Yes, universal support |
| Scales without blurring | Yes, vector, resizes to any size cleanly | No, fixed resolution once exported |
| File size | Very small for simple line art | Larger, depends on the pixel size you export at |
| Editable as shapes | Yes, lines and curves stay editable | No, just a grid of pixels |
| Transparency | Supported, but not always honored outside Office | Yes, reliable alpha transparency |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WMF to PNG when you need to use an old Windows clipart image or Office graphic somewhere that doesn't support WMF, like a website, a Mac app, or a non-Office document.
Keep the WMF if you still need to resize or edit the graphic as vector shapes later, since PNG locks it in as a fixed grid of pixels.
Why not just use an online converter?
WMF files often come from internal Office documents, presentations, or old company clipart libraries that were never meant to leave a computer. Uploading one to an online converter sends that file, and whatever it depicts, to a server you don't control. Converting on your own machine keeps it there the whole time.
Questions
Does converting WMF to PNG lose quality?
The PNG captures the graphic at whatever size you export it, so it looks the same as the original at that size. What you lose is the ability to resize it later without blurring, since WMF is vector and PNG is not.
Will the PNG still look right if I make it bigger?
Only up to the resolution you exported at. Vector WMF graphics scale cleanly to any size, but once converted to PNG the image is a fixed grid of pixels, so enlarging it will look soft or blocky.
Can I open a WMF file on a Mac?
Not natively, and that's the main reason people convert it. PNG opens in any image viewer, browser, or app on Mac, Windows, or anywhere else.
Does the PNG keep a transparent background?
Yes, if the WMF had one. PNG supports transparency reliably, which is one reason it's a safer choice than JPG for graphics like clipart or logos.
Can I convert WMF to PNG without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never gets sent over the internet.
