What is an AZW file?
AZW is the ebook format Amazon used for older Kindle books, built on Amazon's own version of the Mobipocket format. It stores text, layout, and images for a single title, and it's read losslessly, meaning nothing is compressed away or degraded. Why AZW exists
AZW dates back to the original Kindle launch in 2007. Amazon built it on top of the older Mobipocket format and added its own DRM layer, so it could tie a purchased book to a specific Kindle account. Newer Kindle titles mostly use the AZW3 or KFX formats instead, but plenty of older books and personal documents you've sent to a Kindle still show up as AZW.
