What is a HDR file?

Definition

HDR (Radiance HDR) is an image file format that stores a much wider range of brightness than a normal photo, keeping detail in both deep shadows and bright highlights instead of clipping them. It's lossless, so nothing is thrown away, but that also makes the files large. Most people encounter it in 3D rendering and visual effects work, not everyday photography.

Why HDR exists

The format dates back to the 1980s, built for the Radiance lighting simulation software used by architects and lighting designers to model how real light behaves in a space. The .hdr extension (sometimes .pic) stuck around long after, and the format is now a standard way to store high dynamic range image data outside of that original tool.

A normal photo format caps brightness at 256 levels per color channel, so very bright and very dark areas both get flattened to the nearest value it can store. HDR instead stores floating point values that can represent a far wider range, from a dim shadow to a light source, in one file. That range can then be remapped for whatever screen or use it ends up on.

Most people run into HDR files through 3D and VFX work: environment maps used for lighting in rendering software, or panoramas from HDR capture rigs. It's worth noting that the "HDR" mode on a phone camera produces a regular JPG or HEIC with the extra range already baked in, not this file format.

A note on privacy

Converting it on your own computer keeps the file, and whatever it shows, off the internet entirely.
