When to convert, and when not to
Convert AVI to OGG when you only need the sound from a video, like pulling the audio out of a lecture, a game cutscene, or a recorded soundtrack, and you don't need the picture at all.
Keep the AVI if you still need the video part, since converting to OGG throws away every frame and keeps only the sound.

An AVI file can carry more than the video you see, including embedded audio, timestamps, and sometimes details about whatever camera or software captured it.
