Convert AVI to OGG

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

AVI is a Windows video container that bundles picture and sound together, while OGG is an audio-only format popular in games and open media players. Converting AVI to OGG pulls just the soundtrack out of the video and compresses it, so the picture is discarded. Doing this on your own computer means the file never leaves your machine.

How to convert AVI to OGG

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the AVI file, or a whole folder of them, that you want to convert.
  2. Choose OGG as the output format. Morphjet pulls out the audio track and leaves the video behind.
  3. Convert. The OGG file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert AVI to OGG when you only need the sound from a video, like pulling the audio out of a lecture, a game cutscene, or a recorded soundtrack, and you don't need the picture at all.

Keep the AVI if you still need the video part, since converting to OGG throws away every frame and keeps only the sound.

Why not just use an online converter?

An AVI file can carry more than the video you see, including embedded audio, timestamps, and sometimes details about whatever camera or software captured it. An online converter has to upload that whole file to a stranger's server just to hand back a small audio clip. Morphjet pulls the audio out locally, so the original video, and anything else riding along with it, never leaves your computer.

Questions

Does converting AVI to OGG lose quality?

A little. OGG compresses the audio using lossy encoding, so there's a small trade-off, though it's usually not noticeable for speech, music, or game audio at normal file sizes.

What happens to the video when I convert AVI to OGG?

It's discarded. OGG only stores audio, so converting an AVI to OGG keeps the soundtrack and drops every frame of picture. If you need the video too, keep the AVI or convert it to a video format instead.

Is OGG compatible with more things than AVI?

For audio, yes. OGG plays in most modern browsers, media players, and games, while AVI is an older Windows video format that not all current software still opens.

Can I convert AVI to OGG without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet extracts and converts the audio on your own computer, so the video never has to travel over the internet just to get the sound out of it.

Does the OGG keep any information from the original AVI?

Not much. Since the video track is dropped, what's left is mainly the audio itself. AVI doesn't tag its audio the way music files do, so there usually isn't much metadata to carry over.
