Convert ODT to EPUB

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

ODT is the document format used by free office suites, and EPUB is the reflowable format most e-readers and reading apps understand. To convert ODT to EPUB, open the file in a converter and export it as EPUB. Doing it on your own computer keeps your writing off other people's servers.

How to convert ODT to EPUB

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the ODT file, or a whole folder of them, if you're converting more than one.
  2. Choose EPUB as the output format.
  3. Convert. The EPUB is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

ODT vs EPUB: what actually changes

ODTEPUB
Opens ina free office suite, and other word processorsE-reader apps and reading software, not word processors
LayoutFixed, page based, keeps your exact formattingReflowable, adapts to screen size and font settings
QualityLossless, exact documentLossless text and images, but layout reflows to fit the screen
EditingFully editable in a word processorMeant for reading, not for editing
File sizeSimilar, depends mostly on embedded imagesOften smaller, since text is compressed for reading
MetadataAuthor, revision history, commentsTitle, author, cover image, table of contents

When to convert, and when not to

Convert ODT to EPUB when you've written something in a word processor, a manuscript, a report, a personal book, and you want to read it comfortably on a phone, tablet, or e-reader with adjustable font size.

Keep the ODT if you still need to edit the document or preserve exact page layout like tables and columns, since EPUB reflows text and can lose that precise formatting.

Why not just use an online converter?

A manuscript, memoir, or business document you're converting is often something you'd rather not hand to a stranger's server just to change its format. An online converter uploads the whole file to do that. Converting on your own computer means the writing never leaves your machine, and you can even do it with your wifi off.

Questions

Does converting ODT to EPUB lose formatting?

Plain text with headings and images converts cleanly. Complex layouts, like multi-column pages, precise page breaks, or embedded objects, can shift or reflow, since EPUB is built to adapt to different screen sizes rather than preserve a fixed page.

Will images stay in place?

Embedded images carry over and stay positioned near the same text, though their exact placement can shift a little as the text reflows around them.

Can I edit the EPUB afterward?

Not really. EPUB is meant for reading, not editing, so it's best to keep the ODT as your working copy and only convert to EPUB once you're ready to read or share the final version.

Does the EPUB keep chapter structure and a table of contents?

Usually, yes. If you used heading styles in the ODT to mark chapters or sections, those typically become the EPUB's table of contents.

Can I convert without uploading my manuscript?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so your writing never travels over the internet.

Morphjet converts ODT, EPUB, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
